ABC’s Wednesday is a sitcom half-hour and two long shots
ABC has no answer to the World Series tonight, so it has built a comfortable counter-programming night, and the best of it is the Halloween episode of Abbott Elementary at 8:30pm ET/PT (7:30pm Central). If you want one reason to turn the set on before the network’s late slot, that is it.
Abbott Elementary at 8:30pm ET
The episode is called “Halloween Party”, it is the fourth of the sixth season, and it runs 32 minutes. That is the shortest slot of the night, and it suits a show built on tight comic timing rather than long set pieces. Abbott has the settled rhythm of a series that knows exactly what its half-hour is for. A themed episode is a smart bet in the last week of October, when a holiday hook is the easiest way to make a familiar show feel like an event.
It is also the only thing on ABC tonight that has a clear identity of its own. Everything around it is either borrowed, reheated or a format. That is a compliment to the sitcom more than a criticism of the rest.
Scrubs at 8pm ET
The lead-in is the curious part. Scrubs began life on NBC, ran for ten seasons and 187 episodes, and now opens ABC’s primetime. It is a comfortable warm-up, but a sitcom that finished years ago is a safe scheduling choice, not an ambitious one. The listing gives no episode detail, so treat it as a half hour of comfort viewing and not a reason to rearrange your evening. Against it, CBS has Survivor at 8pm ET/PT and Fox has the live World Series, so ABC is conceding the big audiences and going after the people who want something light.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire at 9:02pm ET
The slot starts at 9:02pm and runs 59 minutes. The episode is billed as “In The Hot Seat”, pairing Sarah Jane Nader with Brooks Nader and Colin Jost with Michael Che in the chair. It is the anchor of the night by length, but it is a quiz, and a quiz is only as good as the people sweating through it. The celebrity pairings are the draw here. If the names mean nothing to you, the hour will not change your mind about the format.
Shark Tank at 10:01pm ET
“I Smell A Rat” is the title of this one, episode five of the eighteenth season, and it closes the primetime block at 59 minutes. Shark Tank has been on ABC for years and is the best-established name in the evening after the sitcom. It is dependable, mildly addictive, and exactly the sort of show you leave on as the night winds down. I would put it a notch below the 9pm quiz only because I do not know who is pitching, and the title tells me very little.
What to skip
Everything before 8pm is local programming, and the national news at 6:30pm ET is the only fixed point. After 11pm local programs run until Jimmy Kimmel Live! at 11:35pm ET, so the late-night slot is the one other firm appointment on the night.
The short version: Abbott Elementary is the pick, Shark Tank is the reliable closer, and if you are a baseball fan, you are not here anyway.
