Comedy Central hands the night before Halloween to The Office

Comedy Central has scheduled Halloween, the fifth episode of The Office’s second season, at 8:10pm ET/PT (7:10pm Central) on October 30, which is the one piece of calendar-aware programming on an otherwise mechanical day. It is the pick, and the reason to tune in rather than just leave the channel on.

The rest of primetime is a straight Office run. The channel picks up season two at 6pm with The Dundies and works through it in 35-minute slots: The Fight at 8:45pm, The Client at 9:20pm, Performance Review at 9:55pm and E-mail Surveillance at 10:30pm. Earlier, at 5pm, the first season’s Basketball and Hot Girl lead in. It is nine hours of the same sitcom, which is either a marathon or a wall of noise depending on how you feel about it. The show has run nine series and 204 episodes, so a day spent in season two is a small slice of a very long run.

Against it, the competition is heavy. The World Series is on Fox, and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Sheriff Country are on the big networks. Comedy Central is not trying to win that hour, only to offer a familiar alternative.

At 11pm, 50 First Dates, the 2004 romantic comedy with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, runs for two hours. It is a comfortable late slot and gets three stars.

Everywhere else is South Park, Family Guy and Seinfeld, which fill the overnight, morning and afternoon hours as they do most days.
