TLC hands primetime to one show and trusts the habit

TLC’s Wednesday is a single decision made three times. Untold Stories of the ER takes the 7pm, 8pm and 9pm ET slots in a row, which makes it the whole evening and the only real reason to be here before 10pm.

That is a confident bet, and a safe one. The show has turned up on nine different days since mid-October, so this is a fixture, not an event. The 8pm hour is the one to pick if you’re choosing a single entry point. It goes up against Survivor on CBS and The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City on Bravo, so anyone sampling it is doing so as an alternative to the loudest competition on the dial. At 9pm it faces Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Watch What Happens Live, a quieter field. We rate it three stars: dependable, repetitive by design, and not trying to be more.

The change of pace comes at 10pm ET with Save My Skin, which is the episode titled “I’m a Squeezer.” It’s the only primetime slot on the channel that isn’t a repeat of the hour before, and it’s the kind of title that tells you exactly how strong your stomach needs to be. Two stars, mainly for variety.

Earlier in the day the channel leans on its weight-loss and body strands: 1000-lb Sisters, My 600-lb Life in two-hour blocks, and Dr. Pimple Popper, which restarts at 9am ET with the season two opener. Those are for the daytime or the DVR, not for tonight’s decision.
