Film4 saves its scares for the last four hours

On Halloween, Film4 does what you would hope: it keeps the horror for after dark. Talk to Me at 10pm and Barbarian at 11.50pm make a neat late double, and both are from 2022. Before them the channel plays it fairly safe, but the daytime has a better film than its slot suggests.

The late double

Talk to Me stars Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto and Zoe Terakes, and runs 110 minutes. Barbarian follows at 11.50pm with Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, and is 125 minutes long. Both are horror, which is a neat way to build a Halloween evening without calling it a theme night. Talk to Me is my pick because it comes first, at a civilised hour. Barbarian finishes at 1.55am, so it is for the committed. At 10pm the opposition is Top of the Pops on BBC Two and the weekend news on BBC One, which is no contest.

The evening opens with I, Robot at 7.45pm, a 2004 film directed by Alex Proyas and starring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell and Shia LaBeouf. It is a repeat of Tuesday’s showing, and it faces Four in a Bed on More4 and Ghosts on Dave. Three stars: solid science fiction, but a straightforward Saturday-night choice rather than a destination.

A Knight’s Tale at 5.10pm is the longest film of the day at 155 minutes, with Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany and Shannyn Sossamon.
The best of the daytime is The Ghost and Mrs Muir at 1pm, from 1947, with Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison and George Sanders. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, it is a romance with a fantasy streak and the best use of a weekend lunchtime on the channel. Sink the Bismarck! at 11am is the war film for the morning, and A Christmas Carol, the 1984 version with George C. Scott, arrives at 3.05pm. Darkman rounds off the overnight at 1.10am.
