Two hours of MAS*H that jump eleven series
The best idea in tonight’s GREAT! TV schedule is an accident of programming: MAS*H runs from 7pm to 9pm, and the four episodes do not follow one another. The first pair come from the eleventh series, the last of the run. At 8pm the sequence resets to the beginning, with the pilot and then the second episode of series one. Anyone who wants to see how a comedy changes across 11 series and 256 episodes can do it before nine, with Alan Alda, Loretta Swit and Larry Linville in the original cast.
The 8pm pilot is the one to switch on for. It is up against The Great British Bake Off on 4seven and DIY SOS on BBC One, and at 8.30 Coronation Street on ITV1 and Keeping Up Appearances on BBC Four, so MAS*H is a choice rather than a default.
Brush Strokes follows at 9pm. Karl Howman and Gary Waldhorn lead the cast of a sitcom that ran for five series and 40 episodes on BBC One. Two episodes from series one play first, and at 10.20pm the channel jumps to the opening of series three. It is a quieter evening than the MAS*H block, and that is exactly the point.
Robin’s Nest closes the night at 11pm.

Little House by day, MAS*H by night
GREAT! TV is one of the most settled channels we track, and it has a clear split down the middle of the day. Daytime belongs to American family drama: The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Highway to Heaven. Evening belongs to MAS*H, usually four episodes in a row from 7pm, and late night to 1970s British sitcom. Across the five weeks we counted, 90% of airtime went to titles that recur on three or more days.
The split is sharp. Drama is 39% of the whole day and just 1% of primetime. Sitcom does the opposite, rising from 27% of the day to 68% of the evening.
What a GREAT! TV day looks like
The small hours are the channel’s oddest stretch. Rising Damp, Man About the House or Robin’s Nest usually fill 1am to 2am, Air Rescue follows at about 2am on every day we tracked, and then Highway to Heaven runs from about 3am, broken up by Good News from GREAT!, a bulletin of a few minutes. TJC, a shopping channel, takes over at 5am, on all 34 days.
Daytime is a relay of family drama. Bramwell holds 9am, the same slot on 22 days, then Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman takes the late morning. Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons fill the middle of the day in pairs: on a typical weekday, Little House at noon and 1pm, The Waltons at 2pm and 3pm, then Little House again at 4pm and 5pm. Little House aired 126 times in 34 days and The Waltons 113. The 6pm hour goes to Dr. Quinn, or on some days to The Irish R.M. or Rumpole of the Bailey.
The 6pm to 10.30pm evening is MASH. On 25 of the 34 days it ran four episodes back to back from 7pm to 9pm, and it aired 174 times in all, more than any other title on the channel. At 9pm comes either a film, a double bill of Brush Strokes, the historical drama Empire, or more MASH. Late evening returns to sitcom, with Robin’s Nest and Rising Damp around 11pm and a last MAS*H before midnight.
Weekends loosen things up. Sitcom drops from 31% of weekday airtime to 17%, films rise from 3% to 11%, and The Waltons can run all day: one weekend in the window carried eight episodes in a row from 8.40am. Then a film or two fills the late afternoon and evening.
Popular shows on GREAT! TV
MAS*H is the channel’s evening, with 174 airings and four episodes a night on most weekdays.
The Waltons is the American family drama that began on CBS in 1972 and ran to nine seasons and 221 episodes, with Richard Thomas, Ralph Waite, Michael Learned, Ellen Corby and Will Geer in the cast. It is the backbone of the afternoon and of the weekend.
Little House on the Prairie is the most-shown daytime drama on the channel, at 126 airings, on 29 of the 34 days.
Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman is a CBS western drama from 1993, six seasons and 150 episodes, starring Jane Seymour and Joe Lando. It fills the late morning and early evening.
Highway to Heaven is the NBC fantasy drama from 1984, five seasons and 111 episodes, starring Michael Landon, who also directed, and Victor French. GREAT! TV keeps it in the small hours, on every one of the 34 days.
Rising Damp is the 1974 ITV sitcom with Leonard Rossiter, Frances de la Tour, Richard Beckinsale and Don Warrington, four series and 28 episodes. It runs late at night alongside Robin’s Nest, the 1977 ITV sitcom with Richard O’Sullivan, Tony Britton and Tessa Wyatt, six series and 48 episodes.
Bramwell is an ITV period drama from 1995 starring Jemma Redgrave, David Calder and Ruth Sheen, four series and 28 episodes, at 9am.
The films are rare on weekdays and lean British and comic at weekends: The Belles of St. Trinian’s (1954, directed by Frank Launder, with Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell and George Cole), The Ladykillers and Kind Hearts and Coronets with Alec Guinness, and David Lean’s Hobson’s Choice. Martin Campbell’s The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro, both with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, also turned up.
How to watch GREAT! TV
GREAT! TV is on Freeview channel 34, Sky 157 (167 on Sky Glass) and Virgin Media 170. On Freely it is channel 32, which needs an aerial. It is not on Freesat. GREAT! TV+1, an hour later, is on Freeview 61 and Sky 257. It also streams free on Great! Player, which is Freeview channel 63 on connected TVs. Watching any channel live needs a TV Licence.
GREAT! TV and its sister channels
GREAT! TV is the classic-series member of its family. GREAT! Action swaps family drama for Burn Notice, The Unit and an action film at 9pm. GREAT! Movies is a crime channel, built on Murder, She Wrote and made-for-TV mysteries. GREAT! Romance runs romantic TV films, and Christmas ones in the late autumn and winter. GREAT! Mystery, which we do not cover separately, completes the family.
Outside the family, That’s TV is the closest relative: it shows Rising Damp and Man About the House too, but builds its whole day out of British sitcom where GREAT! TV saves it for the night. For older British films than the weekend comedies here, Talking Pictures TV has far more of them.
Who it’s for
GREAT! TV is for someone who wants comfort television on a fixed timetable: a homestead drama after lunch, MAS*H after dinner and Leonard Rossiter at bedtime. It is very good at that and makes no attempt at anything else. If you want a film on a weeknight, or new drama of any kind, look elsewhere.
