More4 builds a gentle evening around dogs

The Dog House at five to eight is the reason to be on More4 tonight, and the channel knows it: the Australian version is on just before it, at 6.50pm, so the evening is effectively two hours of the same idea. This is episode two of series nine, 65 minutes, and it is the most inviting thing on a channel that otherwise leans on long runs of Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me. Four stars, and the pick.

It is worth noting how often the show turns up. The Dog House has aired on ten days across the window, and the Australian spin-off on six. Whatever else you say about More4’s scheduling, it backs the shows it believes in. Against it, the competition is heavy, with The Great British Bake Off on 4seven, DIY SOS on BBC One and Motorway Cops on Channel 5 all starting within minutes, so this is a night where the audience will already have a firm idea of what it wants.

Matt Baker, then the hospital

At 9pm More4 moves to Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales, episode three, a home improvement series. It turns up on four days across the window, and it is a low-key hour next to Blue Lights and Gogglebox. Three stars: reliable rather than special.

At 10pm it is 24 Hours in A&E, episode eight of series 34, then another at 11.05pm. The programme has 12 series and 312 episodes to its name, a number that suggests both the format’s durability and how often the channel returns to it. Three stars. It is the sort of programme you either find compelling or have already decided against.

The rest

Daytime is mostly Four in a Bed, and then Come Dine with Me, five of the Bristol episodes in a row from 11.35am. Car S.O.S follows at 4.50pm with the Healey 3000, and American Pickers at 5.50pm. Overnight is Our Farm Next Door, more A&E and a very long teleshopping block from 3.50am.

The short version: a quiet night, with one proper reason to tune in at five to eight.

Four in a Bed, all day, and 24 Hours in A&E at ten

More4 is a British channel that launched in 2005, and in practice it is two programmes with a channel wrapped around them. Over the five weeks we tracked, Four in a Bed aired 315 times, more than nine episodes a day, and Come Dine with Me 170 times. Those two competition formats take more than half of all airtime. The evening is medical documentary, led by 24 Hours in A&E, which aired 120 times and was on every one of the 34 days we measured. Almost nothing on More4 is a one-off: 99% of its airtime went to titles that recurred on three or more days, the most repeat-heavy schedule of any Channel 4 channel.

What a day on More4 looks like

Overnight and early morning. Emergency Helicopter Medics often starts just after midnight, followed by repeats of 24 Hours in A&E or 999: On the Front Line. A teleshopping block runs in the small hours on every day, usually around 3.50am, and the overnight slot either side of it is filled by A Place in the Sun, Food Unwrapped and The Perfect Pitch.

Morning and daytime. Four in a Bed starts around 8.55am and runs in long blocks of back-to-back episodes. Come Dine with Me takes over from about 11.35am and alternates with it into the afternoon. On a weekday the two together fill most of the hours until teatime.

Late afternoon. Car S.O.S takes about 4.50pm on most days, often as a double. American Pickers sits at 5.50pm on some days, and The Dog House from about 6.50pm.

The evening, 6pm to 10.30pm. The Dog House is the 7.55pm fixture, on 25 evenings in our window, with more Four in a Bed before it on some nights around 7.25pm. The 9pm slot is the one place More4 tries something different, and it rotates through short documentary and lifestyle runs: Scotland’s Golden Coast, Coastal Unit, Sandi’s Great Riviera Rail Trip, Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids, Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales, Our Yorkshire Pub Rescue with Jon Richardson and Valley of the Kings: Secret Tomb Revealed all held it in turn. Then 24 Hours in A&E arrives at 10pm, on 30 of the 34 evenings.

Late night. 999: On the Front Line or The Emergency Ward usually follows at about 11.05pm, so the evening ends as it peaks, in hospitals and ambulances.

A medical channel after dark

The genre figures show how sharply More4 changes at night. Competition reality is 53% of all airtime but 23% of primetime. Medical programmes are 13% of the day and 31% of primetime, and documentary 34%. At weekends the daytime loosens a little: home and garden programming, mostly A Place in the Sun, rises from 2% of weekday airtime to 24%, while Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me ease back from 56% to 47%.

There are no films. We counted none in the five weeks.

Popular shows on More4

24 Hours in A&E is a British medical documentary series that began on Channel 4 in 2011 and has run to 12 series and 312 episodes, which is how More4 can show it nightly. It is the channel’s most dependable reason to tune in.

Four in a Bed is a British reality series first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2010. On More4 it is less a programme than a background, filling morning, afternoon and early evening.

Come Dine with Me is a British reality cookery series that began in 2006 and has run to 41 series and more than 1,300 episodes, a depth that suits a channel airing five a day.

The Dog House is a British documentary series that began on Channel 4 in 2019, with three series to date. It holds More4’s 7.55pm slot most evenings.

Car S.O.S is a British motoring series with 12 series and 122 episodes, and the late-afternoon change of pace.

999: On the Front Line is a British emergency-services documentary with four series and 40 episodes, usually the last thing More4 shows before midnight.

More4 and the rest of the Channel 4 family

More4’s siblings are Channel 4, E4, E4 Extra, Film4 and 4seven. Channel 4 runs Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me too, but only at 5pm and 5.30pm, with news and documentaries in the evening. E4 is the younger sibling, built on The Simpsons and dating shows. Film4 shows films all day. 4seven is the other repeat channel, but it follows the main channel’s recent evenings rather than its daytime.

Outside the family, 5STAR is the closest match for the medical documentaries, with GPs: Behind Closed Doors and Casualty 24/7 in its evening, and Really offers the same kind of daytime background viewing, built on antiques and property rather than B&Bs.

Who it’s for

More4 is for people who like competitive B&B owners and dinner parties on in the background through the day, and hospital documentaries at night. If you have never seen 24 Hours in A&E, it is the best thing here. For drama, comedy or films, choose another channel.
