Yesterday’s evening is a Bangers & Cash marathon with one palate cleanser

Tonight on Yesterday is mostly Bangers & Cash, and anyone who dislikes it should look elsewhere. It fills 8pm, 10pm and 11pm, with a spin-off called Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics at 9pm in between. Add the showings at midnight, 8am, 9am, 2pm and 3pm and the programme is on nine times in a day. That is a daily strand rather than a repeat, but it makes tonight feel like a loop.

The one break in the pattern is Explore at 7pm, which is the pick almost by default. It is the longest primetime programme on the channel, though that is a low bar when every slot is an hour. It has aired on only four days in the ten we can see, so it is not part of the furniture in the way the car strand is, and a change of subject is welcome. Yesterday isn’t saying what Explore is about, so I would treat it as a gamble. It starts against The One Show and Blue Peter, neither of which will be missed by anyone who wants something different.

The spin-off is the sensible choice for the car fans. Restoring Classics at 9pm is the only variation on the strand all evening, and with Gogglebox and Blue Lights on the other side it offers a clear alternative to those who want to watch something quiet. A programme called Restoring Classics has a promise built into the title, and it is a kinder note than a main strand that has already used up three hours of the night.

Antiques Roadshow at 6pm is a decent lead-in. It also airs at midday and 1pm, so by the time it gets to the evening it has been on three times. Pairing it with the 7pm Explore makes a decent start to the night, and then the cars take over.

A caution: the daytime is much the same. World War 2 From Above and War Factories are both on twice, and Great Continental Railway Journeys fills the early morning. If you have not found anything by 7pm, the rest of the evening will not change your mind.

My advice: Explore for variety, Restoring Classics for comfort, and keep the rest in the table.

A history channel that spends most of its time in the garage

Yesterday sounds like a history channel, and in the mornings it is one. But the single fact that best describes it is a motoring one: Bangers & Cash aired on all 34 days we tracked, 191 times in total, an average of between five and six showings a day. Around it sit canal journeys, railway journeys, war history and the occasional landmark wildlife series, which together make Yesterday a gentle, slightly nostalgic factual channel with an unexpected appetite for classic cars.

It is a repeat channel through and through. 90% of airtime went to titles that came back on three or more days, and films hardly feature.

What its day looks like

Mornings travel. Great Continental Railway Journeys and Secrets of the London Underground share the early slot from around 6.10am, and between them made 87 appearances in the window. By 10am the channel turns to the Second World War: Adolf Hitler’s War, Hitler: Countdown to War, The Buildings That Fought Hitler and World War 2 From Above take turns around 10am, with Rise of the Nazis, Battle Honours and Train Rescue Down Under around 11am.

Midday is antiques. Antiques Roadshow aired on 25 of the 34 days, 75 times, often in blocks of three from around noon, with Flipping Bangers sometimes taking the slot. The afternoon then drifts between canal and railway series, with Blue Planet appearing around 5pm on a few days.

The evening, 6pm to 10.30pm, has a simple shape: travel or nature at 7pm, cars from 8pm. The 7pm hour went to Frozen Planet, Planet Earth and a long run of Simon Reeve series (Caribbean, Russia, Ireland, Burma and The Americas). At 8pm, Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics took 13 evenings, alongside Guy Martin: Proper Jobs and Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero. The 9pm slot rotates between Canal Boat Diaries, Dream Car Fixers, Classic Car Kings and Saving Lives At Sea. Then, on 32 of the 34 evenings, Bangers & Cash at around 10pm, frequently running straight on to 11pm and beyond.

Late night is more of the same. Find It, Fix It, Flog It held 1am on 24 nights without moving, Great Canal Journeys turns up around 2am, and teleshopping has its single slot at 3am.

Popular shows on Yesterday

Bangers & Cash is the channel’s engine. A classic-car series, it ran 191 times across five weeks, with its spin-off Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics adding another 19. If you switch Yesterday on at a random moment in the evening, the odds favour this programme.

Antiques Roadshow is the daytime anchor, appearing on 25 days and usually in long midday runs.

Canal Boat Diaries is a British series from 2019 and the channel’s most-aired title after Bangers & Cash and Antiques Roadshow, with 63 showings. It moves around the schedule more than most, from afternoons to the 9pm slot.

Frozen Planet is the 2011 British nature documentary first shown on BBC One, directed by Alastair Fothergill, with seven episodes. Yesterday shows it in the 7pm hour. Planet Earth, from 2006 and also directed by Fothergill, took the same slot on two evenings.

Saving Lives At Sea is a documentary series first shown on BBC Two in 2016, with eight series made. On Yesterday it takes the 9pm slot for short runs.

Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero is a 2013 British miniseries that appeared at 8pm on two evenings, one of several presenter-led travel series the channel uses to vary its evenings.

How to watch Yesterday

On screen the channel is now U&Yesterday. It is free to air on Freeview channel 27, Sky 155, Sky Glass 133 (161 in Scotland), Virgin Media 129, Freesat 159 and Freely 27. It also streams live and on demand through U, the free service formerly known as UKTV Play. A TV Licence is needed to watch or record it as it airs.

Yesterday and its sister channels

Yesterday belongs to the U& family with Dave, Drama, Alibi, Gold, W and Eden. Dave is the comedy channel, and its daytime overlaps with Yesterday’s more than you might expect: both carry Canal Boat Diaries and Guy Martin: Proper Jobs, but Dave’s evenings are panel shows rather than restorations. Drama is the archive drama channel, all detectives and classic medical soaps.

Outside the family, Quest is the closest neighbour, with restoration and antiques series such as The Repair Shop and Salvage Hunters on most days. Really also carries The Repair Shop, among a broader mix of homes and reality.

Who it’s for

Yesterday is for someone who likes old cars, canals and trains, and is happy to have a war documentary on in the morning. It is easy company rather than demanding viewing. It is not the place for drama, comedy or anything new, and if Bangers & Cash is not your thing, you will run out of evening quite quickly.

What channel is Yesterday on Freeview?

Yesterday, now shown as U&Yesterday, is on Freeview channel 27.

Can I watch Yesterday online?

Yes, live and on demand, through the free U streaming service, previously UKTV Play.

What’s on Yesterday most evenings?

Travel or nature at 7pm, a car series at 8pm, Canal Boat Diaries or another factual series at 9pm, and Bangers & Cash from 10pm.

Is Yesterday a history channel?

Partly. War history fills the mid-morning, but in the evening the channel belongs to classic cars and travel.
