ITV4 saves its best for 10pm, and cuts it in half
The reason to be on ITV4 tonight is The Gentlemen at 10pm, a 2019 Guy Ritchie crime comedy with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell in it. Everything before it is motoring, reality and old favourites, which is fine if that is your thing and easy to skip if it is not. The catch is the way the film is delivered: an hour of it at 10pm, a five-minute FYI Daily at 11pm, then the last 70 minutes at 5 past. Settle in with that interruption in mind, because the break lands at the worst possible moment for a film built on momentum.
Crime comedy is a good fit for a weeknight, and it is the one programme on the channel today with a cast list worth a second glance. Four stars, and the pick of a quiet night.
The motoring double bill
Before the film, ITV4 runs two motoring programmes back to back. The Motorbike Show starts at 8pm, listed as the first episode of series eight. It is on for the third night in a row, which says something about how ITV4 treats it: a strand that fills the primetime hole rather than an event. Treat the “episode one” label with that in mind. Three stars is about right for a show that knows exactly what its audience wants and rarely pushes past it.
Junk and Disorderly follows at 9pm with episode seven of its second series. It sits in an odd corner, part auction show and part motoring programme, and that mix is the whole appeal. It also lands directly against Gogglebox on E4, which is the stiffer competition at that hour. If you are staying on ITV4 through to the film, it is a perfectly good way to fill the gap. Three stars.
Minder at teatime
The best of the daytime slots is Minder at 5.45pm, which opens series eight with The Loneliness of the Long Distance Entrepreneur. The show has ten series and 108 episodes behind it, and George Cole is the name attached to it. It airs on ITV4 every day, so this is a fixture rather than a one-off, but a series opener at that hour makes a decent early-evening anchor. River Monsters follows at 6.50pm for those who want to stay put.
Daytime and overnight
The rest of the day is the usual ITV4 mix. American Pickers fills four slots and Dempsey and Makepeace two, with Robin of Sherwood also making a series-two start at 11.35am. Ice Road Truckers fills the afternoon. None of it needs a column of its own, but if you are building a day around the channel, those three drama strands are the quality end of the schedule. Overnight is BattleBots, Motorsport UK, an episode of Lost and then a long block of teleshopping from 3am.
The one-line summary: a thin evening for ITV4 until 10pm, then a film worth the interruption.

Old ITV action, American pickers and a lot of wrestling
ITV4 is the channel where ITV’s archive goes to keep working. It launched in 2005, and the schedule we tracked over five weeks is built from a small number of familiar strands run again and again: 87% of its airtime went to titles that turned up on three or more days. Seventies and eighties crime drama fills the day, American reality series about hauling and collecting fill the gaps, and sport, mostly wrestling, motorbikes and football highlights, takes over at weekends. New commissions barely register.
What a day on ITV4 looks like
The early morning belongs to American Pickers, which appeared on 25 of the 34 days we measured and often in long runs: 101 airings in all, more than any other title on the channel. It usually starts around 6am, sometimes sharing the slot with The Protectors.
From mid-morning the archive takes over. Minder was on 30 of 34 days, usually from about 8.05am and often twice in a row. The Professionals tends to follow in the late morning, around 11.20am, with Dempsey and Makepeace and The Champions in the same stretch, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes appearing after lunch on some days. Ice Road Truckers picks up the mid-afternoon, around 3.50pm.
The evening has one dependable anchor before it breaks up. Sharpe ran on 27 days, usually from about 6.50pm, sometimes nearer 7.10pm. After that the channel stops behaving like a daytime rerun service. On some evenings the 7pm slot went to road and motorbike series such as King of the Roads and IRT Deadliest Roads, with The Motorbike Show at 8pm. The 9pm hour is where ITV4 does its films, and they come in franchises: the RoboCop trilogy, Rocky II and Rocky III, The Terminator and Alex Cross all ran there, each on two days in the window. Benidorm takes 9pm on other nights. FYI Daily, a short news bulletin, was the most regular thing in primetime, usually at 10.05pm.
Late night is wrestling. All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite and All Elite Wrestling: Collision each appeared on ten days, both starting a little after 11pm. Overnight there is Two and a Half Men, BattleBots, Auto Mundial and a teleshopping block at 3am, which ran on every single day we measured.
The weekend turns to sport
ITV4 is two channels depending on the day. On weekdays, sport is about a tenth of airtime and collectibles reality about a fifth. At weekends sport rises to 31% and American Pickers disappears entirely. The sport that fills it is mostly morning fare: English Football League Highlights (usually at 9am), The Big Match Revisited and the two fishing series, The Grand Fishing Adventure and Underwater Grand Fishing Adventure. Crime drama drops from 18% of weekday airtime to 7%, and films nearly treble their share.
Popular shows on ITV4
Minder is the backbone. It is a British drama series that began on ITV in 1979, starring George Cole, and ran to 10 series and 108 episodes, which is why ITV4 can show it most days without running out.
Sharpe is a British historical drama that began in 1993, starring Sean Bean alongside Hugh Fraser, Daragh O’Malley and Assumpta Serna, with 16 episodes. It is the closest thing the channel has to an early-evening appointment.
The Professionals is a British crime-action series first shown on ITV in 1977, with Gordon Jackson, Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins, made over five series and 57 episodes.
American Pickers is a US reality series about antique and collectible pickers, first broadcast in 2010 and made for History, with 190 episodes across eight seasons. Its sheer airtime makes it ITV4’s most-shown programme.
Ice Road Truckers is a US-Canadian reality series that began in 2007, with Lisa Kelly among its regulars, and reached 11 seasons and 138 episodes.
Benidorm is a British sitcom written by Derren Litten, first on ITV1 in 2007, nine series and 56 episodes long. On ITV4 it fills the 9pm slot on the nights without a film.
How to watch ITV4
ITV4 is free-to-air. It is on Freeview channel 26, Sky 120 (124 on Sky Glass and Sky Stream), Virgin Media 118 and Freesat 117, and on Freely at 21. ITV4+1 is on Freeview 59 and Sky 220. To watch online, ITVX streams the channel live and has catch-up, free with an account. As with any UK channel, watching live needs a TV Licence.
ITV4 and the rest of the ITV family
ITV4 sits alongside ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV Quiz. ITV1 is the main channel, with the soaps, news and new drama. ITV2 is reality and game shows, with Big Brother in its 9pm slot in the autumn. ITV3 is the nearest relative: it also lives on repeats, but its evenings are Midsomer Murders, Vera and Downton Abbey rather than action and sport.
Outside the family, 5ACTION and Legend cover similar ground in films and action, and Quest has more of the hauling-and-motoring reality that ITV4 runs in the mornings.
Who it’s for
ITV4 suits someone who likes British action drama from before the 1990s, wrestling, motorbikes and an action film at 9pm that they have probably seen before. It is honest about what it is. If you want new drama, or anything recent at all outside the sport, look elsewhere.
What channel is ITV4 on Freeview?
ITV4 is on Freeview channel 26, and ITV4+1 is on 59.
Can I watch ITV4 online?
Yes. ITVX streams ITV4 live and offers catch-up, free with an account.
Does ITV4 show films?
Yes, mostly at 9pm and mostly action franchises. Over the five weeks we tracked, the RoboCop films, two Rocky sequels, The Terminator and Alex Cross were all shown in that slot, each on two days.
Does ITV4 show sport?
Yes, especially at weekends, when sport takes nearly a third of the schedule: football highlights, fishing, motorbikes and, late at night through the week, All Elite Wrestling.
