Legend goes to Texas for the evening, then ends with Van Damme
The night is built around one place. Walker, Texas Ranger takes 8pm, Texas Rangers the film follows at 9pm, and the channel then closes with Sudden Death at 10.50pm. It is a theme night nobody announced, and the last film is the reason to stay up.
Sudden Death is a 1995 action film directed by Peter Hyams, with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Powers Boothe in the cast, and it runs 135 minutes. A late start suits it. The only real rivals are The X-Files on 5action and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on 5usa. Four stars, and the pick.
Texas Rangers is the weaker link. The 2001 film by Steve Miner stars James Van Der Beek, Dylan McDermott and Ashton Kutcher, and it is on again on 1 November, so there is no rush. Two stars. Walker, Texas Ranger is a repeat favourite on this channel, on twice today and across ten days in the window; the 8pm episode is A Ranger’s Christmas, which is a seasonal oddity for the end of October.
Earlier on, McLintock! (1963) with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara fills 2.30pm for 150 minutes, a better afternoon than most.

Is there a film on Legend tonight?

What time does Legend’s evening start?
The evening schedule starts with The Dukes of Hazzard at 6pm.
Cult television by day, an action film at 9pm
Legend is a channel of old American adventure series and films, and its weekday evening barely moves: Babylon 5 at 7pm, Walker, Texas Ranger at 8pm, then a film at 9pm. Across the five weeks we tracked, Walker held 8pm on every single weekday and Babylon 5 held 7pm on 25 of 34 days. Around that spine sit The Dukes of Hazzard, Star Trek and a big rotation of westerns, war pictures and straight-ahead action, with films taking more than a third of all airtime.
That makes Legend two channels sharing one frequency. One is a dependable rerun channel with fixed appointments you could set a watch by. The other is a film channel that rarely shows the same title more than twice in five weeks.
What a Legend day looks like
The broadcast day proper starts at 5.30am with teleshopping, which ran on all 34 days. Weekday mornings then belong to the series: Walker, Texas Ranger at 8am, The Dukes of Hazzard at 9am and Babylon 5 at 10am. Babylon 5 is the most-shown title on the channel, with 75 airings across 30 days, and The Dukes of Hazzard is close behind on 70.
Legend Lowdown, a short entertainment and chat slot, turns up around 12.50pm on most days, and then the afternoon goes over to films. These lean old: westerns such as Comanche Station, Ride in the Whirlwind and 3:10 to Yuma, and war and adventure pictures like Yangtse Incident, The Flight of the Phoenix and Fair Wind to Java. Star Trek takes 5pm, the same slot on 25 days, and The Dukes of Hazzard comes back at 6pm.
The 6pm to 10.30pm evening is the most predictable stretch Legend has. The Dukes at 6pm, Babylon 5 at 7pm, Walker at 8pm, and then the 9pm film, which runs to around 11.30pm. That film is nearly always action, and usually recent: Killing Salazar, Contract to Kill, Black Dawn, The Foreigner, Death Race, xXx and Hunter Killer all filled it while we were counting. Primetime splits roughly evenly between science fiction, crime drama and film. A second film follows the first, and the hours from midnight to 5am are films too, mostly lower-budget action.
Weekends break the pattern. Walker disappears completely: crime drama goes from 12% of weekday airtime to nothing at all on Saturdays and Sundays. Babylon 5 often runs several episodes back to back through the morning, the afternoon becomes a double or triple bill, and film rises to 43% of airtime. The Twilight Zone fills 8pm on most weekend evenings, ahead of the usual 9pm film.
Popular shows on Legend
Babylon 5 is the channel’s backbone. The science fiction series was on air on almost every day we measured, at 10am and 7pm on weekdays and sometimes five episodes in a row on a weekend morning.
Walker, Texas Ranger is a crime drama with a western streak, a weekday fixture at 8am and 8pm that vanishes at weekends. Its TV film follow-up, Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire from 2005, directed by Aaron Norris, turns up in the late morning too.
The Dukes of Hazzard is the American action-comedy series that began on CBS in 1979 and ran to seven series and 147 episodes, with Tom Wopat, John Schneider, Catherine Bach and Denver Pyle in the cast. Legend runs it at 9am and 6pm.
Star Trek is the most fixed daytime appointment on the channel: one episode at 5pm, same slot, on 25 of the 34 days.
The Twilight Zone, the science fiction anthology series, is Legend’s weekend-evening regular at 8pm.
The films are where the variety lives. Steven Seagal is the most frequent star by a distance, in seven films including Black Dawn, Machete, Driven to Kill and Maximum Conviction. Michael Caine appears in Zulu, Get Carter and The Jigsaw Man; Charlton Heston in The Savage and Arrowhead; Randolph Scott in Comanche Station. Charles Marquis Warren, director of Arrowhead and Flight to Tangier, is one of the most repeated names behind the camera. Some British horror shows up as well, with Peter Cushing in Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors and The Blood Beast Terror, but our window ran into late October, so treat that as Halloween seasoning rather than the channel’s year-round diet.
How to watch Legend
Legend is on Freeview channel 41, Sky 148 (156 on Sky Glass), Virgin Media 149 and Freesat 137. On Freely it is channel 38. It also streams live and on catch-up through Watch Free UK, a free streaming service. As with any channel watched as it airs, you need a TV Licence to watch it live.
Legend and its sister channels
Legend’s family is Legend Xtra, True Crime and True Crime Xtra. We do not cover those three with guide pages of their own.
The closest match outside the family is GREAT! Action. The overlap is real rather than notional: Comanche Station and Ride in the Whirlwind both aired on each channel during the same five weeks, and Steven Seagal is a regular on both. GREAT! Action leans harder on disaster films after midnight and war films at weekends. For British films from the 1940s and 1950s rather than American action, Talking Pictures TV is the place.
Who it’s for
Legend suits someone who likes a fixed evening routine and an action film to finish it: three familiar series from 6pm, then something with explosions at 9pm. It is good for westerns in the afternoon and for anyone working through Babylon 5. It is not the place for new drama, British television or anything recent beyond the action films, and if you want Walker at the weekend, you are out of luck.
