Film4’s best films are in the afternoon, not at nine
Robin and Marian at 16:40 is the film to catch: Richard Lester’s 1976 picture with Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Shaw, Richard Harris, Nicol Williamson and Denholm Elliott. It runs 130 minutes, and a cast like that is worth clearing the teatime for. It is the pick, at four stars, and it’s on this channel twice in the window.
Arabesque at 12:55 is the other one that earns its place. Stanley Donen’s 1966 spy comedy has Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren, with Alan Badel and Kieron Moore in support, and 125 minutes is a comfortable lunchtime length. Between them, the two make the afternoon the strongest stretch of the day, with The Mark of Zorro (a 1974 television film, 95 minutes, with Frank Langella) between them at 15:05 as the lighter stop.
Primetime is more modern and less memorable. The Contractor, from 2022, stars Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, JD Pardo and Kiefer Sutherland, and runs 125 minutes from 21:00. It’s an action film that has been on twice in the window, so it’s a safe, serviceable choice rather than a destination, and it’s against Gogglebox and The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked. Three stars.
If you want to stay up, The First Omen follows at 23:05, a 2024 horror from Arkasha Stevenson with Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson and Charles Dance, at 140 minutes. Three stars.
Rat Race at 18:50 is the big-cast comedy for the early evening, Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese and Whoopi Goldberg among them, and The Frighteners (Michael J. Fox, 1996) turns up at 01:15 for insomniacs.
