Film4 spends the day on Westerns and the night on two ghost stories
Film4 has laid out a Wednesday with a clear shape: an afternoon of Westerns, a long drama in the early evening, and two of the best films on British television after 9pm. All of Us Strangers at 9pm is the pick, and The Innocents at 11.10 is the reason not to go to bed.
The 9pm film
All of Us Strangers is a 2023 film from director Andrew Haigh, listed as a romance and a fantasy, with Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell in the cast. At 130 minutes it takes the whole prime slot, and the rivals are mostly factual: 24 Hours in A&E on 4seven and Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One, with Max Payne on 5Star the only other film. A ten-minute interview special leads in at 8.50, and a five-minute version airs at 6.10pm, which is the channel signalling that it knows this is the night’s centrepiece. Five stars.
The late one
The Innocents is a 1961 film directed by Jack Clayton, based on The Turn of the Screw, with Deborah Kerr, Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin and Michael Redgrave. It is listed as a ghost film, and it comes on at 11.10 for 125 minutes. Put the two together and this is a double bill that doesn’t need the daytime to justify it. Five stars.
The Western block
From 11am the channel runs The Violent Men, Ride Lonesome, Gun Fury and The Man From Laramie back to back. The last is the one to catch: Anthony Mann directed it, with James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy and Donald Crisp, at 4.05pm. Ride Lonesome has Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher behind it. Three of the four have also aired earlier in the fortnight, so it’s a good block to dip into rather than a reason to clear the afternoon. Four stars for Laramie.
Legends of the Fall follows at 6.15pm. It’s a 1994 film from Edward Zwick with Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Julia Ormond, and at 155 minutes it is the longest film of the day. A solid three.
In the Earth, the 2021 Ben Wheatley film, is on at 1.25am for anyone still up.
