Quest saves its one new thing for 9pm

Quest has a standard evening of restoration, auctions and antiques, and the single item billed as new is Richard Hammond’s Workshop at 9pm. That makes it the pick, mostly because everything around it is the sort of programme that Quest runs all week. A fresh title in a channel full of strands is worth noticing, and the 9pm slot puts it against Gogglebox and Blue Lights with a better claim than most.

It is followed at 10pm by The Repair Shop, which is a stronger programme than the schedule suggests. It is a British series with Jay Blades and Will Kirk, and it runs on Quest every day in the window, so it is a fixture and not a treat. It faces BBC News at Ten and Surgeons: A Matter of Life or Death, which makes it the gentle end to a heavy night. If you pick one half of the 9pm and 10pm pairing, make it the 10pm.

Antiques Road Trip leads the evening at 7pm. It is a BBC Two series, listed as factual, and it has aired in every one of the ten days we can see. Reliable, then, and not much else to say. It starts against The One Show and Police Interceptors, and for someone who wants a slow start it is the right one.

At 8pm the channel turns to Sam Lovegrove: Race Mechanic. It has turned up on only four days in the window, which marks it as occasional rather than permanent. Against DIY SOS on BBC One and NCIS on 5USA it is a niche proposition, but a niche proposition is what Quest does well. Three stars: worth a look if the motor-racing angle appeals.

The rest of the evening stays in the table. The Yorkshire Auction House and its celebrity version fill the early evening, Salvage Hunters appears throughout the day and How Do They Do It? closes the night twice in a row at 11pm and 11.30pm. Quest’s strength is that it has a reliable shape, and tonight’s shape is clear: warm up, try the new thing at 9pm, then wind down with The Repair Shop.

Salvage, sheds and auction rooms, all day

Quest is a factual channel about old things and the people who find, fix and sell them. Salvage yards, auction houses, barns full of forgotten cars and Australian mining camps take up almost all of its day, and it runs them at a brisk pace: the median day we tracked carried 28 separate programmes. It is also heavily repeated. Across 34 days, 97% of its airtime went to titles that recurred on three or more days.

That does not make it monotonous so much as consistent. The same dozen series rotate through the day, The Repair Shop closes most evenings, and the odd run of fresh episodes lands at 8pm or 9pm.

What its day looks like

The early morning is restoration. Salvage Hunters: The Restorers held the 6am slot on most of the 29 days it aired, and Salvage Hunters itself, the channel’s most-shown title with 101 airings, usually follows from 7am. Aussie Gold Hunters takes over around 9am on most days, and Outback Opal Hunters around 11am. The midday hour often goes to Outback Truckers or Wheeler Dealers.

The afternoon belongs to sheds. Shed And Buried aired 98 times across 29 days, usually from around 3pm, with its spin-off Shed And Buried: Classic Cars around 2pm on 13 of them. Find It, Fix It, Flog It held 4pm on 25 days without moving, Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House took 5pm on 15, and The Yorkshire Auction House usually lands at 6pm.

The evening, 6pm to 10.30pm, follows a clear pattern. Antiques Road Trip took 7pm on 25 days, every one of them in the same slot. The 8pm hour rotates between The Yorkshire Auction House, Vinnie Jones In The Country and Ant Anstead: Born Mechanic. The 9pm slot is where Quest puts episodes billed as new, with fresh runs of Vinnie Jones In The Country, Aussie Gold Hunters, Ant Anstead: Born Mechanic and The Derbyshire Auction House appearing on a handful of nights each. Then The Repair Shop: 33 of the 34 days, 87 airings, and most evenings it starts at around 10pm. On a few nights in the window, MotoGP highlights took 10pm instead, a strand that follows the racing season.

Late night is engineering. How Do They Do It? usually starts around 11pm, Richard Hammond’s Workshop turns up at 1am on some nights, and How It’s Made, on all 34 days, fills the slot around 4am before teleshopping at 5am.

Popular shows on Quest

The Repair Shop is a British documentary and reality series built around restoring treasured objects, with Jay Blades and Will Kirk among its regulars. On Quest it is the nightly closing act, and the single most reliable fixture in the evening.

Salvage Hunters is the channel’s most frequent title, with 101 airings in five weeks, often three or four a day. Its sister series, Salvage Hunters: The Restorers, opens the morning.

Antiques Road Trip is a factual series first shown on BBC Two in 2010. Quest gives it 7pm, and it held that slot on every evening it appeared.

Shed And Buried is the afternoon staple, a classic-car and collectables series that ran almost a hundred times in the window.

The Yorkshire Auction House is Quest’s auction-room series, on 30 of the 34 days, with a celebrity spin-off at 5pm and a sister series set in Derbyshire.

Aussie Gold Hunters is the anchor of the channel’s Australian strand, alongside Outback Opal Hunters and Outback Truckers. The three together give the daytime schedule a distinctly sunburnt look.

Quest and its sister channels

Quest’s family is Really, Quest Red, DMAX, TLC, Food Network and Discovery. Really is the closest relation and shares some of Quest’s titles, including The Repair Shop, but it leans further towards homes, gardens and the paranormal. Quest Red, DMAX, TLC, Food Network and Discovery fill out the group.

The closest match outside the family is Yesterday, whose evenings are built around classic cars and restoration, with Find It, Fix It, Flog It in common. 5Action shares Outback Truckers and a taste for big vehicles in its overnight schedule.

Who it’s for

Quest is for someone who enjoys watching an old thing become valuable: a barn find, a broken heirloom, a lot that sells for more than expected. It works best on in the background, and it rarely asks for commitment. If you want anything scripted, or anything that is not a repeat, this is the wrong channel, though the 9pm slot sometimes carries fresh episodes.

What channel is Quest on Freeview?

Quest is on Freeview channel 17, and Quest+1 is on channel 70.

Can I watch Quest online?

Its programmes are on discovery+, which requires a subscription. There is no free streaming service named for Quest.

What’s on Quest most evenings?

Antiques Road Trip at 7pm, an auction or restoration series at 8pm and 9pm, and The Repair Shop from around 10pm.

Does Quest show films?

No. Over five weeks we counted close to no films: it is factual series from morning to night.
