Blue Lights is the reason to stay on BBC One tonight
The evening is built around DIY SOS at 8pm, but the programme that earns its slot is Blue Lights at 9pm. It is the only drama on the channel’s primetime, it is on its fourth series, and BBC One gives it the hour that Gogglebox on E4 and Ben Fogle on Channel 5 are both fighting for. If you only have one hour to give BBC One, give it that one.
The Northern Irish police series stars Siân Brooke, Richard Dormer and Martin McCann, and tonight’s episode is series four, episode five, called Ghosts. Nothing in the title tells you what to expect, and I’m not going to guess. What matters is the track record: a police procedural that has reached a fourth series is doing something right. A four-star hour, and the pick of the night.
DIY SOS carries the 8pm hour
A Home for Nathan is the sixty-minute anchor of the schedule, and DIY SOS is the kind of series that does not need a reason beyond its own format. It has racked up 205 episodes, which is a long run for a programme about building work. It appears only twice in the window, tonight and a week ago, so this is not a strand you can catch again tomorrow. That matters because the opposition is real: The Great British Bake Off is on 4seven at the same moment, with First Dates on E4 and Motorway Cops on Channel 5 for anyone after something lighter or louder. Three stars, solid rather than special.
EastEnders at 7.30
EastEnders follows The One Show at 7.30. Tonight is episode 171 of the year, and the series as a whole stands at 7,512 episodes after 42 series. Those numbers are the story: a soap that has been on air long enough that any single episode is a drop in the ocean, and a reliable half-hour for the people who watch it. Over on ITV1 at the same time sits Tipping Point: Best Ever Finals, and E4 has Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Three stars, because a soap this size is judged by the habit, not the night.
Late: Stacey Dooley
The late slot belongs to Stacey Dooley, whose Death in the Barracks starts at 10.40pm, straight after BBC News at Ten and a ten-minute BBC London bulletin. It runs an hour, which puts it against Britain’s Countryside on ITV1 and Newsnight on BBC Two at the start of that window. A documentary with that title is not light viewing, and the late slot suits it. She is on twice in the window, tonight and a week ago, so tonight is the night. Clickbait Clinic with Stacey Dooley follows at 11.40pm for anyone still up.
The rest
The afternoon is the usual run of Bargain Hunt, Money for Nothing, Escape to the Country, The Bidding Room, Bridge of Lies and Pointless, all of which sit in the table. Nothing there needs defending, and nothing there needs a sales pitch. The night belongs to Blue Lights.

The channel the rest of British television sets its clock by
BBC One is the BBC’s flagship channel, on air since 1936, and its schedule is built around news more than anything else. Across the five weeks we tracked, news filled 43% of all airtime. No other genre came close: game shows, the next biggest, managed 8%. Bulletins arrive at almost every turn of the day, and everything else is arranged in the gaps between them.
That makes BBC One one of the most predictable channels on British television, and the predictability is the point. Ninety-two per cent of its airtime went to titles that turned up on three or more days. It runs close to around the clock, with about 23 and a half hours a day accounted for and some 38 programmes on a typical day.
What a BBC One day looks like
Morning. Breakfast takes the 6am slot and holds it on weekdays, followed by Morning Live at 9.30am. Mid-morning belongs to consumer and crime strands that rotate through the week, Crimewatch Live and Rip-Off Britain both sitting at 10.45am. Homes Under the Hammer arrived on 33 of the 34 days we measured, usually at 11.30am.
Daytime. Bargain Hunt is the most reliable fixture on the channel: it ran on every single day we tracked, almost always at 12.15pm. The BBC News at One follows at 1pm, then the regional bulletin (BBC London, in the version we measured). Afternoons are property, gardens and old furniture. Escape to the Country sits at 3pm, Garden Rescue at 3.45pm, then Bridge of Lies or Antiques Road Trip at 4.30pm. Pointless closes the afternoon at 5.15pm.
Evening, 6pm to 10.30pm. The weekday evening barely moves. The BBC News at Six at 6pm, The One Show at 7pm, EastEnders at 7.30pm on the nights it runs. The hour from 8pm is where BBC One spends its effort, and it changes through the week: Panorama, DIY SOS, Antiques Roadshow and The Repair Shop: Beyond the Barn all held the 8pm slot on different nights. At 9pm a drama such as The Split Up takes over on its night, or a comedy like Not Going Out at 9.30pm. Then the BBC News at Ten at 10pm, followed by regional news at 10.30pm.
Late night. Have I Got News for You turns up at about 10.40pm once a week, Match of the Day at 10.30pm on its night, and films fill the late slots on others. After about 1am the channel hands over to rolling news, with Newsday and Business Today carrying the small hours.
Weekends shift the balance. Weather’s share of the schedule jumps from 1% on weekdays to 9% at weekends, and the news magazines that fill weekday mornings mostly disappear.
Popular shows on BBC One
EastEnders is the BBC’s soap, first shown in 1985 and now past 7,500 episodes. It ran on 20 of the 34 days we measured, always at 7.30pm, which is about four nights a week rather than every night.
Bargain Hunt is a daytime antiques game show and the closest thing BBC One has to a permanent resident: 34 days out of 34, at a quarter past twelve. If a single programme sums up the channel’s daytime, it is this one.
Antiques Roadshow has been running since 1979 and is past 40 series and 700 episodes. On BBC One it is an 8pm programme, appearing once a week in the window we tracked.
Have I Got News for You is the panel show that began in 1990, with Ian Hislop and Paul Merton as its fixtures. It has passed 69 series. It started out on BBC Two and now sits late in the evening on BBC One once a week, at around 10.40pm.
Not Going Out is the Lee Mack sitcom that began in 2006, with Tim Vine and Sally Bretton among its cast over the years. It held 9.30pm on its night.
The Celebrity Traitors is a competition reality series that ran in the autumn at 8pm, with a companion chat show, The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, following at about 9.05pm. Treat it as a seasonal event rather than a year-round fixture.
How to watch BBC One
BBC One is on Freeview channel 1, with the HD version on 101 (newer Freeview Play televisions show the HD picture on 1). It is on 101 on Sky, Sky Glass, Virgin Media and Freesat, and on channel 1 on Freely. Each platform carries the regional BBC One for your area, which is why the local news after the main bulletins differs depending on where you live.
It streams live and on catch-up on BBC iPlayer. A TV Licence is needed to watch BBC One live on any platform, and to use BBC iPlayer at all.
BBC One and its sister channels
The BBC family is the biggest on British television: BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC News, BBC Parliament, BBC Scotland and BBC Alba.
BBC Two is the one to compare it with. It reruns some of the same daytime factual formats, but its afternoons are built on quizzes and its evenings on documentaries. BBC Four only broadcasts in the evening and fills it with archive music, history and arts programming. CBBC and CBeebies are the children’s channels, for older children and pre-schoolers respectively. BBC Three, BBC News, BBC Parliament, BBC Scotland and BBC Alba are not covered on this site.
Outside the BBC, ITV1 is the nearest match in what it shows: soaps in the early evening, news at fixed points and a big entertainment slot at weekends. Channel 5 works differently by day, with children’s programmes filling much of its morning, but its evenings are built from the same kind of factual series BBC One puts at 8pm.
Who it’s for
BBC One suits anyone who wants the news at fixed times and a reliable run of familiar formats around it. Daytime is for people who enjoy watching other people’s houses, gardens and heirlooms. The evening is where the channel takes its risks, and it changes more from night to night than the daytime ever does. If you want a film, BBC One shows about four a week, mostly late at night or in the afternoon, so it is rarely the first place to look.
What channel is BBC One on Freeview?
BBC One is Freeview channel 1, and BBC One HD is channel 101. Newer Freeview Play sets show the HD version on 1.
Can I watch BBC One online?
Yes. BBC One streams live and on catch-up on BBC iPlayer, which needs a TV Licence.
What’s on BBC One most evenings?
On a typical weekday: the BBC News at Six at 6pm, The One Show at 7pm, EastEnders at 7.30pm on its nights, a factual or entertainment programme at 8pm, drama or comedy at 9pm, and the BBC News at Ten at 10pm.
Does BBC One show films?
Yes, about four a week in the period we measured. Family films such as the Shrek series went out in the afternoon; grown-up films such as Children of Men and The Nice Guys went out after 10.30pm.
