Bake Off first, then a long Denzel Washington sequel
4seven’s evening is decided at 8pm. The Great British Bake Off: Pastry Week is the best thing on the channel tonight, and it gets 75 minutes, longer than most of what surrounds it. It is series 17, episode 6, and the show is a BBC One original with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith among the names attached to it. Pastry is the week where a tent tends to come apart, which is reason enough to turn up.
Anyone who misses it has a second go. The same show airs again at 3.15am, in the form of Dessert Week, so the channel is leaning on it twice today. That is a lot of Bake Off, but it is also a sign of what 4seven thinks its audience wants. It faces First Dates on E4 and DIY SOS on BBC One at the same hour, so the competition is real.
The Equalizer 2 follows at 9.15pm and runs 145 minutes, which makes it the longest thing in primetime. It is a 2018 Antoine Fuqua thriller with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Melissa Leo in the cast. It will take you well past 11.30pm, so treat it as a commitment rather than background. Channel 4 is putting Tempting Fortune up against it, which gives anyone who doesn’t fancy a two-and-a-half-hour action film an easy exit.
Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals opens the evening at 7pm with episode 5 of series 1. It is a gentle lead-in to the baking, and it turns up on three days in this window, so there is no urgency about catching it tonight.
Earlier in the day it is mostly property and holiday homes: A Place in the Sun for hours, Come Dine with Me in half-hour slices, and Help! We Bought a Village at 11am. All of it is a fixture, and none of it needs reporting on.

A second chance at Channel 4, with A Place in the Sun on a loop
4seven is a British channel that launched in 2012, and its job is replaying recent Channel 4 programmes. That is exactly what its schedule does. Almost nothing on it is exclusive: 93% of airtime over the five weeks we tracked went to titles that recurred on three or more days, and they are the same titles that fill Channel 4’s own afternoons and evenings. A Place in the Sun was on every one of the 34 days, 166 times in all, close to five episodes a day. Come Dine with Me aired 135 times. Where Channel 4 runs a property show once in the afternoon, 4seven runs it at breakfast, teatime and again at 7pm.
What a day on 4seven looks like
Overnight. Gogglebox repeats usually open the day just after midnight, on 26 of the 34 days, followed by Tempting Fortune, Geordie Coppers or Taskmaster in the 1am hour. Teleshopping takes over around 6am every day.
Morning. A New Life in the Sun: Where Are They Now? holds 9am on most weekdays. Then 10am belongs to either Renovation Nation or Find It, Fix It, Flog It, and Help! We Bought a Village takes 11am. Each of those kept the same slot whenever it aired.
Afternoon. From about 3pm, Come Dine with Me runs in long blocks, sometimes swapped for George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces: First Home. Four in a Bed tends to follow around 5.30pm, and then A Place in the Sun begins its evening run from about 6pm.
The evening, 6pm to 10.30pm. A Place in the Sun usually carries on to 7pm and beyond: it held the 7pm slot on 19 evenings in our window. Some nights 7pm went instead to The Great Celebrity Pottery Throw Down or Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals. At 8pm the channel replays Channel 4’s bigger shows: The Great British Bake Off in the autumn, Location, Location, Location, The Dog House. At 9pm Grand Designs was the most common choice, on 14 evenings, with 24 Hours in A&E, Gogglebox and Celebrity Gogglebox on others. The 10pm slot leans to emergency-services documentaries, 999: On the Front Line and 999: What Happened Next.
Films, now and then. About three films a week turned up, most often at 10pm and mostly comedies or action, with later films after 11pm. In our window they included the whole American Pie series (American Pie, American Pie 2, American Pie: The Wedding and American Pie: Reunion), both Kingsman films, Knight and Day and The Day After Tomorrow, each shown just once.
Mostly property, and more competitions at weekends
Competition reality is 30% of all airtime, home and garden 24%. In primetime the balance tips towards houses: home and garden rises to 30%, and documentary to 18%. At weekends the competitions grow from 28% of airtime to 35%, while other reality falls from 15% to 8%.
