Channel 4 hands its night to The Great British Bake Off

The Great British Bake Off gets seventy-five minutes at 8pm, the longest programme in primetime, and everything else on Channel 4 tonight is arranged around it. It is the only reason to be here at that hour, and it is a good one: a baking contest that has run to 90 episodes over 10 series, with Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in its cast list.

Bake Off, twice

Bake Off turns up again at 10.15pm in a programme listed as New: The Great British Bake, with the rest of the title cut off. That is a second Bake Off-titled slot in one evening, which tells you how much the channel values the franchise. The main show also airs on 4seven at the same time as Channel 4, so anyone choosing between the two is choosing between the same title. It appears on six days in the window, so it is more than a weekly event. Four stars for the main show, three for the 10.15 follow-up, which I can’t say more about because Channel 4 doesn’t.

Tempting Fortune at 9.15

The slot after Bake Off belongs to Tempting Fortune, an hour starting at 9.15pm. There is little to say about it beyond that it is a 2023 British programme. Its rivals are barely there. 4seven has The Equalizer 2 and little else starts nearby, which is an easy run for a programme that doesn’t need to be great. Two stars, the weakest of the night, because there is nothing on the page to recommend it beyond the slot.

Before and after

Channel 4 News fills the 7pm hour, a full sixty minutes, ahead of the main event. Early evening is the usual run of Four in a Bed, Come Dine with Me and A New Life in the Sun. The night closes with 999: On the Front Line at 11.05pm, an hour that suits the late slot. Three stars for staying up.

The day is a comedy-and-property schedule: Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond and The King of Queens in the morning, then American Pickers, Renovation Nation, A Place in the Sun and Help! We Bought a Village through the afternoon. It is a dependable run, and it will not change anyone’s night.

Two channels in one: American sitcoms by day, Channel 4 by night

Channel 4 has been on air since 1982 as a British public-service channel, and its schedule splits cleanly in two. Until lunchtime it is a repeat service for American sitcoms: Frasier ran 115 times in the five weeks we tracked, Everybody Loves Raymond 102 times, The King of Queens 75. From the afternoon it becomes a property and lifestyle channel, and only after Channel 4 News at 7pm does it look like the broadcaster people mean when they say “Channel 4”: Gogglebox, Grand Designs, Taskmaster and documentary series that change from night to night. Across the whole day, 85% of airtime went to titles that turned up on three or more days.

What a day on Channel 4 looks like

Early morning. Countdown opens most days, often around 5.50am, and comes round twice on the days it airs. Then the sitcoms start: Cheers from about 6.15am, The King of Queens around 6.30am, Everybody Loves Raymond from 7.45am and Frasier from about 9.10am, with The Simpsons slotted in around 9.25am on about two days in five. These run in blocks of back-to-back episodes. Raymond appeared on every one of the 34 days we measured, and Frasier on 30.

Late morning and afternoon. American Pickers sits at 11.10am on most weekdays, a short Channel 4 News Summary at 12.05pm, then Renovation Nation or Find It, Fix It, Flog It at 12.10pm. The Great House Giveaway holds 1.10pm. A Place in the Sun takes 3pm, Help! We Bought a Village 4pm. Every one of those held the same slot on most days.

Teatime. Four in a Bed at 5pm and Come Dine with Me at 5.30pm are the channel’s two most dependable early-evening fixtures, on 29 and 27 days respectively. A New Life in the Sun follows at 6pm.

The evening, 6pm to 10.30pm. Channel 4 News at 7pm is the hinge of the whole schedule, on every day we measured. After it the channel stops repeating itself. No single title filled the same primetime slot on more than five days in the window. At 8pm we saw Location, Location, Location, Our Tiny Islands and, in the autumn, The Great British Bake Off. The 9pm slot rotated between Grand Designs, Taskmaster, Gogglebox and the documentary series Apocalypse, with Tempting Fortune at 9.30pm on some nights. At 10pm the channel puts its sharper factual titles, Geordie Coppers and Martin Compston: Living Las Vegas among them.

Late night. Three Women around 11pm on some nights, then Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA and Taskmaster repeats after 1am, with Couples Come Dine with Me filling the small hours.

Films hardly feature at all; we counted close to none in an average week.
