ITV1’s night is two soaps and a question mark
Two soaps back to back from 8pm are the whole case for ITV1 tonight, and the 9pm slot that follows is a gamble. Emmerdale at 8 and Coronation Street at 8.30 are the safe hour. After that comes an hour-long programme ITV1 lists only as New: Unbelievable Moments, with the rest of the title cut off, and the channel isn’t saying what it is.
The soaps
Emmerdale has run to 10,775 episodes over 55 series. Coronation Street has run to 12,040 over 67. Between them that is nearly 23,000 episodes, and ITV1 puts them in the same hour for the viewer who wants both. Emmerdale goes up against The Great British Bake Off on 4seven and DIY SOS on BBC One at 8pm, while Coronation Street at 8.30 has an easier run, with MAS*H on Great TV and Would I Lie To You? on Dave the closest rivals. I’m giving each three stars. They do what they do, and the pick is Emmerdale because it takes the harder slot.
Nine o’clock
Unbelievable Moments gets an hour at 9pm, the longest programme in primetime. It appears on two days in the window, tonight and last Tuesday, which is a thin record to judge it on. Against it: Blue Lights on BBC One, Gogglebox on E4, Surgeons on BBC Two and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on 5USA. That is the hardest hour of the night to win, and a programme with an unexplained title is not obviously the one to win it. Two stars, with the caveat that there is nothing here to go on.
Before the soaps
Tipping Point: Best Ever Finals opens primetime at 7.30, a half-hour that runs against EastEnders. It is on three days in the window, so ITV1 is leaning on it. A best-of is a fair way to fill the slot but it asks little of anyone. Two stars.
The tail end
ITV News at Ten at 10 is the fixed point, followed by ITV News London and a fifty-minute Britain’s Countryside at 10.45. Sorry, I Didn’t Know closes at 11.35pm. None of it changes the verdict: tonight is a soap night, and the 8pm start is when ITV1 is at its best.

Talk in the morning, quizzes in the afternoon, soaps at 8pm
ITV1 is a free-to-air channel that has been on air since 1955, and its weekday is one of the most rigidly ordered on television. Seven programmes held exactly the same weekday slot across the five weeks we tracked: Good Morning Britain at 6am, Lorraine at 9.30am, This Morning at 10am, the lunchtime news at 1.30pm, the evening news at 6.30pm and the News at Ten at 10pm, with The Chase at 5pm on 29 of the 34 days. Emmerdale and Coronation Street sit back to back at 8pm and 8.30pm on the nights they run.
Around 83% of its airtime went to titles that came back on three or more days, and it showed almost no films. ITV1 builds its day from talk, quizzes, soaps and news, and it rarely strays.
What an ITV1 day looks like
Morning, 6am to 12.30pm. This is the talk block, and on weekdays it does not move. Good Morning Britain runs from 6am, Lorraine from 9.30am and This Morning from 10am. Weekends swap it for cookery and lifestyle: James Martin’s Saturday Morning at about 7am, Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen around 8.25am and Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh at 9.30am.
Afternoon, 12.30pm to 6pm. Loose Women at 12.30pm on 22 days, then the ITV Lunchtime News at 1.30pm. From there it is game shows almost all the way: Dickinson’s Real Deal at 2pm, Lingo at 3pm, Deal or No Deal at 4pm and The Chase at 5pm, the most dependable afternoon fixture on the channel.
Evening, 6pm to 10.30pm. Regional news at 6pm (ITV News London, in the version we measured) and the ITV Evening News at 6.30pm, on 33 of the 34 days. The 7pm and 7.30pm slots carry lighter entertainment on the nights without a soap, such as The Box, It’ll Be Alright on the Night and Tipping Point: Best Ever Finals. Emmerdale at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm both appeared on 23 days, always in that order. At 9pm ITV1 puts its drama, short series such as The Blame, The Party and Winter that take the slot for a week or two each, or Beat the Chasers on its nights. The News at Ten closes the evening at 10pm, with regional news at 10.30pm.
Late night. Peston at about 10.45pm on its nights, then repeats. The overnight hours are low-key: Shop on TV around 1.30am, factual repeats such as Long Lost Family at 3am and Unwind with ITV at about 3.50am on every day we tracked.
Popular shows on ITV1
Coronation Street is the soap opera that has been running since 1960, with more than 12,000 episodes. Its cast has included William Roache and Sally Ann Matthews. On ITV1 it holds 8.30pm on its nights, straight after Emmerdale.
Emmerdale is the soap that first aired in 1972 and has passed 10,700 episodes. It takes 8pm on the nights it runs, and appeared on 23 of the 34 days we tracked.
The Chase is the teatime quiz that anchors the ITV1 afternoon. It held 5pm on 29 of the 34 days, more consistently than anything else outside the news.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is the quiz show that first aired in 1998 and has run to 35 series and more than 600 episodes. It took the 8pm slot on four evenings in the window.
It’ll Be Alright on the Night is an ITV1 entertainment series dating from 1977, fronted over the years by Denis Norden and Griff Rhys Jones. ITV1 used it in the 7.30pm slot.
ITV News at Ten has been running since 1967. It held 10pm on 25 of the 34 days we measured, and is ITV1’s fixed point at the end of the evening.
How to watch ITV1
ITV1 is Freeview channel 3, with ITV1 HD on 103. It is on 103 on Sky, Sky Glass, Virgin Media and Freesat, and channel 3 on Freely. In central and northern Scotland it appears as STV and in Northern Ireland as UTV, and regional news differs across the country. ITV1+1, the same schedule an hour later, is on Freeview 35 and Sky 203.
It streams live and on catch-up on ITVX, which is free with an account. As with every channel, a TV Licence is needed to watch it live, on any platform.
ITV1 and its sister channels
ITV1 heads a family of channels: ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and ITV Quiz.
ITV2 is the youngest-skewing of them, with Big Brother, game shows and American animation late at night. ITV3 is the archive drama channel, with Classic Coronation Street, Classic Emmerdale and long-running detective series such as Midsomer Murders and Vera. ITV4 leans towards sport, action and films in the evening. ITV Quiz is not covered on this site.
Outside the ITV family, BBC One is the closest match: news at fixed points, daytime formats that rarely move, a soap in the early evening and drama at 9pm. Channel 5 is the other main channel to compare, with more factual series and less talk.
Who it’s for
ITV1 suits anyone who likes their television on a timetable. If you watch the soaps, everything else on the channel is arranged around them, and the weekday shape barely varies from one week to the next. Daytime is built for people at home who want chat and quizzes. It is not a film channel and does not try to be: we counted close to none in five weeks.
What channel is ITV1 on Freeview?
ITV1 is Freeview channel 3, and ITV1 HD is channel 103. ITV1+1 is on 35.
Can I watch ITV1 online?
Yes. ITV1 streams live and on catch-up on ITVX, which is free with an account.
What time are Emmerdale and Coronation Street on?
In the period we measured, Emmerdale aired at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8.30pm, back to back, on the nights they ran.
Does ITV1 show films?
Very rarely. We counted close to no films in five weeks; the evening goes to soaps, drama and entertainment instead.
