Film4’s best film today is on at four in the afternoon

The evening’s film is the weaker half of Film4’s Friday. Memory at nine is the anchor, but the afternoon’s Tora! Tora! Tora! is the film worth arranging a day around, and it starts at 16:00 for 170 minutes.

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 American-Japanese war film credited to three directors, Richard Fleischer, Kinji Fukasaku and Toshio Masuda, with Martin Balsam, Joseph Cotten and Jason Robards in the cast list. It is the longest film Film4 has today, and it has already played within the window, on 24 October. A day-time slot for it is a bit of a waste, but a long war film runs better in daylight than in the late evening. Four stars and the pick.

Earlier, at 13:20, comes Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines: a 1965 British adventure comedy from Ken Annakin, with Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles, James Fox and Robert Morley. At 160 minutes, it is a good companion for a quiet afternoon, and the scheduler has done well to put it ahead of the war picture. Four stars.

Memory at 21:00 is a 2022 action film with Liam Neeson, Guy Pearce and Monica Bellucci. It ran on Film4 on 25 October as well, so this is a repeat within the week, and it is up against M3GAN on E4. Three stars: a competent evening choice for a viewer who wants a thriller rather than a horror.

Late on, Orphan: First Kill (2022, 115 minutes, from 23:15) is the horror option, with Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles. Two stars. Before it, The Lost City at 18:50 is a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe, which also aired on 25 October. The Black Phone follows at 01:25 for those who stay up.
