Shameless is the late reason to stay up on That’s TV
That’s TV spends most of tonight in the 1970s and 80s, and then lets the 21st century in at five to ten. Shameless, the Channel 4 comedy-drama that ran from 2004 to 2013 across 11 series and 139 episodes, arrives at 9.55pm with David Threlfall in the cast. It is the sharpest turn of the evening, and the schedule around it is deliberately mild.
It also has the clearest field to itself. BBC News at Ten and Gogglebox are its opposition, and neither is an obvious rival for someone already settled in with a repeat strand. Shameless airs every day in this window, so tonight is no one-off, but a daily fixture in a late slot still earns a star rating.
The run up to it is solid, not special. Minder opens the main block at 8pm, an ITV series of 10 series and 108 episodes starring George Cole, and it is on twice more today. Benidorm follows at 9pm, ITV1’s sitcom written by Derren Litten, which ran to nine series and 56 episodes. Neither is a surprise. Both are the point of a channel like this one.
Man About the House closes primetime at 10.55pm, the closest thing here to a nightcap.

Minder at 7.55pm, Benidorm at 9pm, every single night
That’s TV is the most repetitive channel we track, and it does not pretend otherwise. It is British comedy and drama repeats from end to end, with no films at all, and 91% of its airtime went to titles that recur on three or more days. Seventeen programmes aired on most of the 34 days we tracked. Minder at 7.55pm and Benidorm at 9pm ran on all 34 of them, in exactly the same slots.
The numbers that tell the story best are about Man About The House. The 1970s sitcom has 39 episodes. That’s TV showed it 131 times in five weeks.
What a That’s TV day looks like
The small hours are a rerun of the rerun: Minder, Goodnight Sweetheart and Man About The House again after 1am, the Kenny Everett Video Show around 3am on most nights, then Nearest & Dearest at 4am, on all 34 days. Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em also turns up around 2am.
From 6am to 8am it is shopping, four half-hour sales programmes in a row, two of them selling cruises.
Daytime is a long chain of sitcoms and period drama in roughly 35-minute slots. Upstairs Downstairs takes 8am, You Rang, M’Lord? around 9am, then Bread, Steptoe and Son, Oh Doctor Beeching!, Rising Damp and Man About The House across the late morning and lunchtime. When the Boat Comes In, the drama, holds the early afternoon at about 1.40pm. The afternoon brings a second Minder, the Likely Lads, Man About The House at about 4.25pm, Bread and then Birds of a Feather at 5.30pm.
The 6pm to 10.30pm evening is as fixed as television gets. That’s 60s – Best Music Live, a short music strand on 33 of the 34 days, usually lands around 6pm, then more sitcom until Likely Lads: Whatever Happened? at 7.20pm, then Minder at 7.55pm, Benidorm at 9pm and Shameless at 10pm, on 33 of 34 nights. Man About The House follows at 10.55pm and Goodnight Sweetheart closes the day around 11.30pm.
Weekend daytimes switch from a chain to a marathon. One title takes a whole block: seven Rising Damp episodes in a row in the morning, five Birds of a Feather in the afternoon, six Are You Being Served Again running into the early evening. The evening, though, does not budge.

How to watch That’s TV
That’s TV is on Freeview channel 56 and on Freely as channel 42, which needs an aerial. It is no longer on Sky, Virgin Media or Freesat. Watching any channel live needs a TV Licence.
That’s TV and its sister channels
That’s TV has a sister channel, That’s TV 2, and a set of local That’s TV services on Freeview channel 7 or 8 in some areas. The local services carry the same programmes, with local news added. We do not cover them separately.
Outside the family, GREAT! TV is the closest match. It shows Rising Damp and Man About the House too, but late at night, after a day of American family drama and an evening of MAS*H. Talking Pictures TV covers older British television with far more variety and a lot of films.
Who it’s for
That’s TV is for someone who knows exactly what they want to watch and wants it at exactly the same time every day: Minder before 8pm, Benidorm at 9pm, a Man About The House or two whenever they look in. It is very good at being predictable. Anyone wanting a film, something they have not seen before, or an evening that changes from one night to the next should look elsewhere.
