ITV2’s evening is a ramp. It begins with game-show repeats, passes through a quiz at eight, and then gives two straight hours to Big Brother: the main show at 9pm and The Group Chat at 10pm. If you are on ITV2 at all tonight, those are the reasons. The rest of the schedule is filler of a familiar kind.

Big Brother, twice

Big Brother at 9pm is episode 39 of the series, and The Group Chat that follows at 10pm is episode 32 of its own run. The 65-minute chat show is the longest programme in primetime, longer than the main show it follows, which tells you how much airtime the franchise is being given. Big Brother has run to 16 series on British television, so the format is no novelty, but the pairing is the channel’s strongest scheduling move of the night.

The competition is Gogglebox on E4 at nine and ten, and that is a real contest. Anyone who wants a straight reality fix has the nine o’clock slot; the Group Chat is the one for people who already know the housemates and want more of them.

The 1% Club at eight

The 1% Club is the quiz that holds the middle of the evening. It is an ITV quiz show, and this hour is the series’ twelfth episode of its fourth run. Against it, other channels have Bake Off on 4seven and DIY SOS on BBC One, so the quiz is the obvious pick for anyone who wants to play along rather than watch somebody cook or build.

Deal or No Deal, before dinner

Deal or No Deal: Banker’s Best Battles is the early-evening filler, at 7pm and again at 7:25. The series opener went out at 1:05pm today, and ITV2 is running it daily this week. There is plenty of it, and it is not pushed as an event.

Late

Family Guy fills the late slot with two episodes, at 11:05pm and 11:35pm. They are the standard late-night comfort on this channel, and neither is a reason to stay up.

The verdict: Big Brother at nine and The Group Chat at ten are worth the evening if you follow the series; otherwise the 1% Club is the safer hour.

Reality by morning, game shows by evening, cartoons after dark

ITV2 is the ITV family’s entertainment channel, and its schedule runs on three things: reality television, game shows and American adult animation. Reality took a quarter of all airtime across the five weeks we tracked, game shows 21% and animation 18%. In the evening the balance tips further towards quizzes, which filled 37% of the 7pm to 11pm slot.

The channel launched in 1998, replacing an earlier channel called S2. It is a heavy repeater: 92% of its airtime went to titles that came back on three or more days, and many of its regulars air twice a day. Family Guy alone logged 68 showings in 34 days.

What an ITV2 day looks like

Morning, 6am to noon. The day opens with Backyard Builds at 6am and Dinner Date at about 6.30am, which aired on 33 of the 34 days. Then it is reality on loop: The Real Housewives of Potomac at 7.30am, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills at 8.20am and The Only Way Is Essex at 9.15am, each with two episodes on most weekdays. Two American dramas from decades ago follow, Dawson’s Creek at 10.15am and Charmed at 11.10am.

Afternoon, noon to 7pm. Deal or No Deal runs every day, usually from about 12.05pm, and Supermarket Sweep takes 1.05pm on its days. Celebrity Catchphrase is the teatime fixture, at around 6pm on every one of the 34 days.

Evening, 7pm to 11pm. Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win or Wheel of Fortune at 7pm, The 1% Club at 8pm on 20 days, and then Big Brother at 9pm, which held that slot on 30 of the 34 days during its run. Big Brother: The Group Chat follows at about 10pm. Family Guy starts the late shift from around 10.35pm.

Late night. After 11pm ITV2 becomes an animation channel. Family Guy, American Dad! at about 12.35am and Bob’s Burgers at around 1.05am run into the small hours, with British comedies such as Plebs, G’wed and Piglets mixed in around 2am. Unwind with ITV and Teleshopping close the night.

Weekends. The weekend is a different channel. Reality falls from 31% of weekday airtime to 9%, the American dramas disappear, and films, children’s programmes, home makeover series such as 60 Minute Makeover and the entertainment bulletin FYI Daily take the space. Films took 13% of weekend airtime against nothing at all on weekdays. In the window we measured, they were mostly the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series, plus Madagascar, which may reflect the half-term holiday rather than the year-round pattern.

Popular shows on ITV2

Big Brother is the British version of the reality format, first shown in 2000 and now past 16 series. When it is running it is the spine of the ITV2 evening, at 9pm most nights, with The Group Chat following at 10pm. It runs as a series, so treat it as a seasonal fixture rather than a permanent one.

The 1% Club is a quiz show that began in 2022. On ITV2 it holds 8pm, with The 1% Club Rollover in the same slot on other nights.

The Only Way Is Essex is the reality series that started in 2010 and has passed 32 series and nearly 400 episodes. ITV2 runs it as a morning repeat, usually around 9.15am.

Dawson’s Creek is the American teen drama from 1998, with James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson. It ran for six series and 128 episodes, and ITV2 shows it at 10.15am on weekdays.
