E4 spends its evening on a sitcom block and saves the argument for ten o’clock

The smartest thing E4 has done tonight is start The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from the very beginning. “The Fresh Prince Project” is S01E01, it airs at 7.30pm, and it is followed by “Bang the Drum Ashley” at 8pm and “Clubba Hubba” at 8.30pm. Three half-hours in a row, in order, from the first episode. For a show that ran for six series and 148 episodes, with Will Smith, James Avery, Janet Hubert and Alfonso Ribeiro among the cast, that is a clean point to join, and it is why this is the pick of the night.

It is also facing little that will pull a viewer away. At 7.30pm the other channels have EastEnders on BBC One and Mastermind on BBC Two; at 8.30pm it is Coronation Street on ITV1 against it. Anyone who watches those soaps will not be moved, but the viewer without a soap habit has a straightforward choice for the whole of the early evening.

The two-hour finish

Made in Chelsea comes next at 9pm, series 32, episode 8. The reality format has run for 157 episodes, and the cast list still opens with Ollie Locke and Mark-Francis Vandelli. It is competent, and that is a limited compliment. Against it, BBC One has This City Is Ours and Channel 5 has Murder: Suspect No 1, so it is a night where the other terrestrials are playing drama, and E4 is playing something lighter. Three stars.

Gogglebox is the anchor at 10pm, S21E08, and it runs 65 minutes. It is a daily strand on E4, so the channel is not treating it as an event. It is the programme the evening is built to reach. It is better than Made in Chelsea and better than the sitcoms, and it gets four stars for being the thing on E4 that does what no other channel quite does.

Everything else is a fixture

Hollyoaks opens primetime at 7pm. It has run for 30 series and is on in the morning too, at 6am and 6.30am, plus an omnibus at 4.30am, so it is as much a part of the channel’s furniture as the continuity announcer. The Simpsons fills 12pm to 1.30pm and 5pm to 6.30pm, and Modern Family takes the morning and mid afternoon, with The Goldbergs between. Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA runs three hours from 8am. That is a lot of repeated comfort viewing, which is exactly what the daytime on this channel is for.

Late on, Dating Naked USA is at 11.05pm, episode 11 of its first series. It has aired on nine of the days in our window, so it is a late fixture, not a discovery. At 12.15am Plan B (2021) is the night’s only film, a 125-minute slot for anyone still awake. Tonight’s story is simpler than that: start the Fresh Prince at half seven, and keep the television on for Gogglebox.
