E4 spends Thursday on comfort viewing, and First Dates is the best of it

E4’s evening is a ladder of reliable half-hours leading up to two hours of Gogglebox, and the rung worth stopping on is First Dates at 20:00. It’s an hour of Fred Sirieix, CiCi Coleman and Merlin Griffiths running the restaurant floor, with 50 episodes in the record and a format that travels well into the middle of a week. Four stars: it’s a programme that works because strangers are awkward in real time, and an hour is the right length for that.

Before it, the channel hands over to the sitcoms. The Simpsons gets 19:00 with The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show, an episode from series eight, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows at 19:30 with The Chopper from series two. At nine, BBC One has The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, ITV4 has Benidorm and Channel 5 has The Madame Blanc Mysteries. At ten, Live at the Apollo is on BBC Two and BBC News at Ten on BBC One. Gogglebox is the safest option for anyone who wants nothing to be asked of them, and three stars each reflects that rather than any weakness.

The rest of the schedule is E4’s usual machinery. Modern Family airs twice, as it does on most days in the window, in blocks at 06:00, 11:00 and from 15:00. Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA fills the morning, Couples Come Dine with Me opens the 7am hour, and Naked Attraction and Dating Naked USA bookend the night for a particular audience. Those are table rows, and the table is the right place for them.

The honest summary is that Thursday on E4 is a quiet night built from fixtures. Start at 19:30 for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, stay for First Dates, and decide at nine whether Gogglebox is still what you want.
