E4 puts Christmas films on the first of November, and Bake Off is the better bet

E4 has started Christmas early. Christmas With the Kranks at 3.55pm and Jingle All the Way at 6pm are both Christmas films, and both go out on 1 November. If that’s too soon for you, the evening has a better answer: The Great British Bake Off at 7.45pm, which is the most watchable thing on the channel tonight.

The Bake Off episode is The Great New Year Bake Off, series 16, and it runs for 75 minutes. It’s the second Bake Off on E4 today, after Pastry Week from series 17 at 12.35pm. The programme has been on the channel on three days in this window, so it’s well-worn territory. It’s still a comfortable hour and a quarter, and it starts at the same time as Four in a Bed on More4 and Ronnie Barker: The Best Of on That’s TV, neither of which is a direct rival.

At 9pm One Born Every Minute moves to the front. This is series 12, episode two, and it’s one of the three days in this window that E4 has run it. It’s up against Gogglebox on 4seven and Live: NFL on 5, so the choice is between a documentary, a reality show and American football. The programme is a safe bet if you’ve seen it before, and you won’t have lost much if you haven’t.

The Other Woman closes the night at 10pm and runs for 135 minutes. It’s a 2014 romantic comedy directed by Nick Cassavetes, with Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, plus Nicki Minaj. It’s long for a comedy, and at that length it’s best treated as background viewing. White House Down on 4seven starts at the same time if you’d rather have something louder.

Jingle All the Way is the better of the two daytime Christmas films for the early evening. It’s a 1996 family comedy with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad and Phil Hartman, and it runs 105 minutes from 6pm. Christmas With the Kranks, with Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, is a 125-minute afternoon slot and a looser fit for a Sunday teatime.

The middle of the day is built from strands that run most days: four episodes of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA from 8.40am, then four episodes of The Simpsons from 1.55pm, drawn from series 4, 8 and 21. The Simpsons has run to 38 series and 812 episodes, so the mix is no surprise. That’s the day on E4. The table below has the rest.
