E4’s Friday builds from two sitcoms to a series opener and a horror film

E4 has a simple shape tonight: two sitcoms, a new series of First Dates, then M3GAN at nine. The film is the pick, but the more interesting slot is the hour before it, because 20:00 is where First Dates opens its fifteenth series.

First Dates is the British version of an international format, it began on Channel 4, and its cast list is Fred Sirieix, CiCi Coleman and Merlin Griffiths. It airs on E4 every day, so a series opener is not a rarity of availability. It is a chance to start a run from the top, and a full hour in the slot before the film makes it the stronger piece of scheduling. Four stars.

M3GAN follows at 21:00 for 120 minutes. It is a 2022 horror, thriller and science-fiction film directed by Gerard Johnstone, with Allison Williams, Violet McGraw and Ronny Chieng among the cast. E4 also showed it on 25 October, so tonight is a second outing within the week. Film4 puts Memory against it at the same minute, and Channel 5 has Harrods: The Rise & Fall of a British Institution. With Halloween the next day, M3GAN is the obvious choice for anyone who wants a fright without leaving the channel. Three stars: it is here because of the date more than because anyone is celebrating it.

Before that, the lead-in does what lead-ins do. The Simpsons at 19:00 is a programme with 38 series and 812 episodes behind it, so a half-hour of it needs no introduction. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which ran for eight series and 153 episodes, follows at 19:30 with “Johnny and Dora”. Three stars for a reliable bridge.

The small hours are better than they look. At 02:10 E4 runs “Treehouse of Horror XVIII”, an apt choice for the night before Halloween, and then a series 36 opener of The Simpsons, “Bart’s Birthday”, at 02:35. Anyone recording overnight has two good reasons to set the box.

Daytime is a long run of the same things. Modern Family airs twice today and on eleven days across the window. Naked Attraction does too, at midnight and 23:55, nine days out of the window. Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA starts its third series at 09:00 with Gordon Ramsay in the cast, though it airs every day. Couples Come Dine with Me and Dating Naked USA also keep returning, and none of it needs planning around.

Late on, Dating Naked USA turns up at 23:00 with an episode called “The Wedding”. Two stars, as a reminder that the channel’s late slot is mostly a rerun of its own earlier habits.

If you only have one evening hour for E4, make it the 20:00 First Dates. If you have three, the film is a sound way to spend the last of them.
