E4 spends Saturday night on other people’s sofas
The best thing on E4 tonight is Gogglebox at 10pm, and the channel knows it: it runs two episodes back to back, with episode 13 of series 24 at 10pm and episode 14 at 11.05pm. Anyone planning an early night should pick one. The rest of the evening is a film and a lot of Simpsons.
Gogglebox, twice
Gogglebox is on E4 on 11 of the days in our window, and twice today, which makes it the channel’s busiest fixture by some distance. That frequency can make it easy to take for granted, but a show that has reached series 24 and still fills a Saturday primetime slot is doing something right. The format is simple enough that there is no point trying to preview it. What tonight offers is volume: 65 minutes at 10pm, then another hour straight after.
It also has the weakest opposition of the night. At 10pm the other channels offer Top of the Pops on BBC Two, the weekend news on BBC One and, on the Five family, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and a couple of entertainment bulletins. Nothing there is a rival for the same sofa.
The warm-up
At 9pm, Celebrity Gogglebox takes the hour before it. This is the spin-off, and the episode listed is simply titled 2020. I would call it a decent appetiser and no more, and a less compelling hour than what follows. It faces Grand Designs on 4seven and NCIS: Los Angeles on 5USA, so the choice is easy if you want something undemanding.
The film
Before all that, Independence Day: Resurgence starts at 6.45pm. The 2016 sequel, directed by Roland Emmerich, stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Jessie T. Usher and Travis Tope. It runs 135 minutes, so it finishes exactly as Celebrity Gogglebox begins. It has already been on E4 once this week, on Sunday. Two stars is a fair verdict for a disaster sequel built for a Saturday teatime, and it does that job.
The afternoon
Midway through the afternoon, The Great British Bake Off turns up at 3.50pm with The Great Christmas Bake Off 2025, a 75-minute special. Anyone starting their Christmas viewing early will find it fits neatly before the film.
And the Simpsons run is long: episodes from 12.25pm through to the film at 6.45pm, with only the Bake Off interrupting. That includes The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show at 1.55pm, which is the one a lot of fans would pick out, and Homer’s Phobia at 2.25pm. Plenty of people will have them on in the background and that is probably the right way to treat them.
The rest
Overnight is the usual mix of First Dates, Below Deck Down Under and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the mornings belong to Kitchen Nightmares USA and Made in Chelsea. None of it needs planning around.
