Blaze’s evening starts with something you could have watched at breakfast
Blaze opens primetime with Mike’s Holy Grail from American Pickers, the same episode it showed at 8.25 this morning. That is the weak point of the night, and it is why the better hour is the one at 9pm: The Curse of Oak Island.
Oak Island is the programme this channel can lean on. The History series has run to 191 episodes, and tonight’s, A Bead on the Target, comes from series 12. It has aired on four days in the listings window, so it is a regular rather than a one-off, and it is the only hour in the evening that does not feel like a loop. Against it, Gogglebox on 4seven and Murder: Suspect No 1 on Channel 5 are doing very different jobs. It is a fair slot for a show of this size.
American Pickers is the obvious disappointment, not because the show is poor (it has 190 episodes behind it) but because twice in one day is a lot to ask. Two stars for tonight’s airing, on the grounds that the morning one was just as available.
Dickinson’s Real Deal at 8pm is the steadier choice. Wood Green 2 follows Wood Green 1, which Blaze ran at 6am, so the pair makes a tidy two-parter for anyone who caught the first half early. It is a daily fixture here, and a safe hour against Panorama and Only Connect.
History’s Greatest Mysteries closes primetime at 10pm with The Mystery of Machu Picchu, and Secrets Declassified With David Duchovny follows at 11pm. Both are decent late company rather than reasons to stay up.
If you only have one hour tonight, make it 9pm.
