Blaze fills primetime with antiques first, aliens second
Blaze has split its evening in two: two hours of Dickinson’s Real Deal, then two of things that may or may not be out there. If you want something you can follow without effort, the first half is the better bet, and Dickinson’s Real Deal at 7pm is tonight’s pick.
It is the same programme at 7pm and 8pm (Huddersfield 2, then Huddersfield 3), which is the sort of scheduling that makes the channel feel like a loop. Dickinson’s Real Deal is a daily fixture here, with earlier episodes at 5am and 6am as well, so tonight’s pair is the evening end of a very long run. The show started on ITV1. Over on BBC One at 8pm sits The Celebrity Traitors, which will take most of the audience, but for a quieter hour of valuations it does the job.
Then the tone changes. Ancient Aliens arrives at 9pm with Secrets of Japan, episode seventeen of series twenty-one. That series count is the telling detail: this is a documentary strand with 22 series and 283 episodes to date, and it gets two outings today, with a 4pm showing too. A programme that appears twice in a day and nearly every day of the week is a staple, not an event. Opposite it, BBC One has The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, and Gogglebox on E4.
UFO Chronicles closes primetime with two half-hours back to back, The Coyame Incident at 10pm and Peni Military Base Incident at 10.30pm. The strand is on twice today, so it is more filler than event. If you prefer your late-night television in the quiet, speculative register, it is fine. If you don’t, BBC News at Ten and Newsnight are available.
Away from primetime, Storage Wars Texas turns up twice and Hardcore Pawn runs through the small hours. Nothing there demands an alarm.
My advice: watch the first Dickinson’s, decide at nine whether you’re in the mood for aliens, and be honest with yourself about the answer.
