Yesterday gives the evening to Simon Reeve, then drifts into Bangers & Cash

Two hours of Simon Reeve open the evening on Yesterday, and nothing else on the channel tonight comes close to them. The Tropic of Capricorn with Simon Reeve starts at 7pm and Simon Reeve’s South America follows at 8pm, which is a proper double bill with a clear idea behind it.

The Tropic of Capricorn has been on four days in the current window, so it is a regular. It meets The One Show, Global Eye and Stage Stars at 7pm, none of which is a real rival. The 8pm hour is tougher: Panorama, Only Connect, Grand Designs and Police Interceptors are all at that time, so the competition is heavy. That makes the South America hour the better test of whether Reeve can hold you, and I would stay on it.

Canal Boat Diaries, a British series from 2019, sits at 9pm. It runs on seven days in the window, so it is another fixture, and it is a gentle hour after the Reeve double. Opposite it are Gogglebox and The Curse of Oak Island. If the first two hours worked, this one extends the mood rather than breaking it.

Then comes Bangers & Cash at 10pm. It is on every day in the window, and tonight it fills slots at midnight, 1am, 8am, 2pm, 3pm, 10pm and 11pm. It is hard to treat as a programme when the channel scatters it across the clock. A spin-off, Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics, runs at 9am. Come for the Reeve hours and treat this as the cue to switch off.
