Yesterday has one hour worth planning around, and it is the first
Simon Reeve at 7pm is the reason to switch Yesterday on this Wednesday. The Tropic of Capricorn with Simon Reeve is the anchor of the evening, and the rest of primetime slides from there towards the cars-and-cash end of the schedule.
It is a good slot for it. At 7pm the opposition is The One Show, Blue Peter and Mortimer and Whitehouse on BBC Two, and a long journey along a line on the map is a different proposition from any of them. Four stars.
At 8pm This World: The Coffee Trail… follows, an hour that keeps the evening moving outwards from the sofa. It meets Celebrity Race Across the World on BBC One, which is the harder opponent if you want to travel by television, and The Repair Shop on BBC Two. Yesterday isn’t saying much about it beyond the title, so the rating is a cautious three.
The 9pm slot goes to Guy Martin: Proper Jobs, which has also been on earlier in the window. It faces Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One, and it is the only programme in primetime that Yesterday has put out on more than one day of the last fortnight. Three stars.
Then the channel does what it does most nights. Bangers & Cash takes 10pm and 11pm, and it also fills midnight, 8am, 9am, 2pm and 3pm. That is seven slots of one title in a single day. If you like it, Yesterday is the place for it, but it makes the first two hours of the evening the only part that looks like a decision someone made.
Earlier in the day the daytime is built the same way. World War 2 From Above and War Factories each run twice, and Antiques Roadshow takes three slots. They are fixtures rather than events, and they will be there tomorrow.
