Yesterday’s night belongs to Bangers & Cash, apart from one hour
The one hour that is not about cars is the first: The Tropic of Capricorn with Simon Reeve at 7pm. It is the longest primetime programme and the only title in the evening that has appeared on just two days in the window, yesterday and tonight. After it, the channel goes back to what it knows. Four stars, and the pick.
It faces The One Show on BBC One at 7pm, and it is a different kind of hour altogether, so the choice is simple. If the evening matters, watch this and then decide what comes next.
What comes next is cars. Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics takes 8pm, Dream Car Fixers 9pm and Bangers & Cash itself 10pm and 11pm. Count the whole day and Bangers & Cash fills seven slots, plus the Restoring Classics spin-off. It is a daily strand, so the channel has plainly decided this is its identity. That is a legitimate choice, but it is a heavy one for a Thursday.
Dream Car Fixers at 9pm is the one worth a look in the middle, mainly because it breaks the pattern, having appeared on only four days in the window. It runs against Gogglebox on E4 and The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked on BBC One, so it has plenty of competition for attention. Three stars.
Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics at 8pm gets two stars. That is not a verdict on the show, only on the placement: it is the first of four car programmes in a row, and nothing here sets it apart from the daytime episodes.
Daytime is Antiques Roadshow, War Factories and Ghosts of Alderney, each shown more than once. Treat those as background. Primetime is where the decisions are, and tonight there is really only one of them.
