Talking Pictures gives its prime hour to a near-two-hour Maigret

Maigret and the Elusive Witness fills the 8pm slot for 115 minutes, the longest programme of the night and the clear pick. It is listed as episode 1 of series 7, and Maigret turns up on this channel on four days in the listings window, so the slot is a regular one rather than a one-off.

A running time that long is a rarity in a schedule otherwise cut into half-hours and hours, and it makes the evening easy to plan: one programme, then nothing to decide until 9.55pm. It sits against Panorama on BBC One and Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts on 5STAR, which makes it the quiet alternative.

Before it, The Footage Detectives takes 7pm with episode 248, a mystery-and-history strand that has aired on four days in the window and makes a decent lead-in. After it comes Mother Love at 9.55pm, which the channel shows twice today, again at 11.05pm.

Daytime holds the better film, if tonight is not free: Web of Evidence, with Van Johnson and Vera Miles, at 1.35pm.
