Talking Pictures saves its best film for last
Talking Pictures keeps its strongest hour back until 10.10pm, when Runaway Train, the 1985 action thriller directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, closes the night. Jon Voight and Eric Roberts lead the cast, and at 130 minutes it is the longest thing on the evening’s schedule.
It is also the most modern film on a channel that mostly lives in the 1950s and 1960s. The day’s other six films are all a long way older, which makes it a useful change of pace. Rebecca De Mornay is in it too.
The daytime pick is From Here to Eternity at noon, a 1953 war drama and romance with Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr and Frank Sinatra, running 140 minutes. If you only have time for one film from the day’s seven, this is the one with the weight of reputation.
The 7pm slot goes to The Bargee, a 1964 comedy with Harry H. Corbett, Eric Sykes and Ronnie Barker, which is a decent way to spend an early evening against Strictly Come Dancing.
