Talking Pictures offers the star-studded alternative to Halloween

While the rest of the dial leans into ghosts, Talking Pictures spends Saturday night on a 1942 portmanteau film with one of the longest cast lists on television. Tales of Manhattan, at 21:10, brings together Charles Boyer, Rita Hayworth, Edward G. Robinson, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers and Charles Laughton, and at 140 minutes it takes the whole of primetime’s back half.

It is the right counterprogramming. Channel 5 has Ghostwatch: The Night That Terrified Britain at the same time, and BBC One has Marble Hall Murders, so anyone not in the mood for either has an obvious classic-era alternative here. It is billed as a drama and comedy, and that spread of tone is the point.

The build-up is a pair of period dramas. Maigret: The Lost Sailor starts the evening at seven, a 1959 to 1963 series with Rupert Davies in the lead. Lillie follows at 20:05, an episode called Mrs. Langtry. Both are slow and patient, and they set up the film without competing with it.

For the daytime, The Lost World opens a series at 00:05, but the schedule is mostly its usual run of old adventure serials.
