Really bets the whole evening on one auction house

Really gives three of its four primetime hours to The Yorkshire Auction House, and the only break from it is 8pm: Antiques Road Trip, which opens series 19 with Charles Hanson and Christina Trevanion on day one of their trip. That is tonight’s pick.

The Road Trip slot matters because it is the one interruption to the pattern. The Yorkshire Auction House fills 7pm, 9pm and 10pm with three different episodes, drawn from series 5 and series 7. It airs every day on Really, so nobody should treat the run as an event. It is a reliable, undemanding block for anyone who wants the evening to go by on its own.

Antiques Road Trip has turned up on the channel on ten days in the last fortnight’s listings, so a series opener here is less a debut than a reset. Still, the format is easy company, and its original home is BBC Two. Against it tonight sit Panorama on BBC One and Only Connect on BBC Two, and Really is not trying to win that fight. It is offering the opposite: nothing to follow, nothing to keep up with.

Later, Help! My House is Haunted turns to series 7 at 11pm with The Room of Doom, its first episode of that series. If the 10pm auction has done its job and you are still awake, it is a better way to close the night than another hour of bidding.

The summary is a three-star night with a four-star hour in the middle.
