Really saves its scares for the two-hour slot

On a Saturday that falls on 31 October, Really spends the evening on gentle restoration and then turns the lights down at nine for Paranormal Lockdown: The Yorkshire Haunting. It is the only reason to be here after eight, and at two hours it is the longest thing on the channel all day.

Paranormal Lockdown is built around Nick Groff, and the format is the draw: a long, slow stretch of a single location rather than the usual quick tour. Two hours suits that. Most ghost-hunting television wastes its running time on recaps, and a double-length slot at least gives the investigation room to breathe. The competition at nine is not scary at all, with Celebrity Gogglebox on E4 and Grand Designs on 4seven, so anyone in the mood for a haunting has a clear run.

Before it, Really is in comfort mode. The Repair Shop fills nine straight hours from noon, with Jay Blades and Will Kirk among its cast, and it runs again at seven and eight. That is a lot of Repair Shop, but it is a daily fixture here, not a special treat. If you want it, it is a decent warm-up for the main event. If you do not, there is nothing else on the channel until nine.

The late shift stays on theme. Help! My House is Haunted returns at 23:00 with Shadow Man, after a double bill in the small hours. It is the better bet for anyone who finds two hours of Paranormal Lockdown too much and would rather take their ghosts in hourly portions.

Verdict: stay in for nine o’clock, skip the rest.
