More4 builds an animal evening and then hands the night to A&E

More4 has lined up two animal programmes back to back and then turned to hospital documentary for the rest of the night, and the second half is where the real quality is. The Secret Life of the Zoo starts a new series at 7.55pm: “Penguin House Hunters” is S08E01 and runs 65 minutes. As a series opener it earns the pick, though only three stars, because the lead-in at 6.50pm is an hour of The Dog House, which has been on the channel on ten of the days in our window. This is a channel with a clear taste for animals before nine, and tonight is no different.

The competition is not strong. At 7.55pm it is up against Panorama on BBC One, Only Connect on BBC Two and Traffic Cops on Channel 5. If you want something gentle that is not a news and current-affairs programme, this is the obvious answer. The Dog House Australia runs just before at 5.50pm, S03E06, so anyone settling in early gets three hours of dog and zoo programming in a row.

The nine o’clock hour and what follows

Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids is at 9pm, S04E05, and fits the animal theme with a rural twist. It is a reality documentary, and it has aired four times in the window, so it is a rotation rather than a debut. Three stars. It faces Gogglebox on 4seven and This City Is Ours on BBC One.

The strongest programme on More4 tonight is 24 Hours in A&E, at 10pm (episode 11, 65 minutes) and again at 11.05pm (episode 12). It has run for 12 series and 312 episodes, and it is also at 12.05am overnight, so it is a daily strand. Even so, it is the one programme on the channel whose format genuinely does something nothing else in the schedule does. Four stars for the double bill, and it is the right way to close the evening.

The daytime is Four in a Bed from 8.55am, with a block of Come Dine with Me from 11.35am, and American Pickers at 4.50pm. None of that needs a mention beyond the fact that it exists.
