More4 offers a hospital double after a long run of B&Bs

More4 has not tried to compete with Saturday night’s big shows. It has scheduled two evenings in one: guesthouse rivalry until 9pm, then hospital documentaries until after midnight. If you want something calmer than The Voice UK, the second half is the one to wait for.

The hospital run

24 Hours in A&E fills 9pm and 10pm, with episode 6 followed by episode 8 of the first series. It is a Channel 4 documentary that has reached 12 series and 312 episodes, so the channel is clearly happy to keep feeding it through the schedule: it appears on More4 every day in our window, and twice tonight. The 10pm episode, at 65 minutes, is the longest programme in the evening and the one I would pick if you only watch one.

What follows is a fresh start. The Emergency Ward begins its fourth series at 11.05pm, with episode 1 running an hour. A series opener at that time is a smart bit of scheduling, because anyone who has stayed with the A&E double is the right viewer for it. It is on More4 on four days in our window, so you can catch it again if you would rather sleep.

The B&B marathon

Before the hospital, Four in a Bed does the heavy lifting. From 6.20pm there are five episodes in a row, the last of them a Payment Day instalment at 8.30pm. Like 24 Hours in A&E, it airs every day, so this is a fixture rather than an event. It is quiet opposition for The Voice UK on ITV1, which starts at the same time as that last episode.

Daytime is more of the same, with A Place in the Sun in the late morning and afternoon and Come Dine with Me after it. It is pleasant, undemanding television and there is no need to plan around it.
