ITV4’s best hour is at seven, and the film is a long way second

ITV4 has put its most interesting programme at the front of primetime and its most famous name at nine, and the order is the wrong way round for anyone who wants to be entertained rather than reassured. IRT Deadliest Roads, S02E07 “Oxygen Required”, starts at 7pm and runs an hour. It is the only thing on the channel tonight that is not already a familiar quantity, and it sits against American Pickers on Blaze, NCIS on 5USA and The One Show on BBC One. Of those, it is the one with a hook in the title.

The Motorbike Show follows at 8pm with S08E02. This is a show that has turned up on ITV4 on five days inside our window, so it is a fixture, and the honest verdict is that it is a steady, specialist hour for people who already know why they are watching. Panorama and Only Connect are on the BBC at the same time, which gives it a captive audience of motorcycle people and few others.

Then the film. Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) stars Steven Seagal alongside Eric Bogosian and Katherine Heigl, with Morris Chestnut, Kurtwood Smith and Everett McGill in the cast. The channel has chopped it in two. The first hour starts at 9pm, a five-minute FYI Daily bulletin sits at 10pm, and the second hour resumes at 5 past. Both parts are listed as hour-long slots, so if you join at 10.05 you are coming in on the back half of a film that has already broken its own momentum. For a 1990s action film that depends on pace, that is a poor way to run it. Three stars is fair: the cast is solid, the packaging is not.

The daytime does the heavy lifting

If the evening feels thin, the afternoon is where ITV4 is more confident. Sharpe’s Revenge opens series five at 4.50pm and runs 130 minutes, which is a proper feature-length slot for a drama that stars Sean Bean and has sixteen episodes to its name. Sharpe turns up on eight days in the window, so it is clearly a strand the channel leans on. Right before it, American Pickers fills two back-to-back hours at 2.55pm and 3.55pm, and it has already been on twice earlier in the day at 6.20am and 7.20am, four episodes in all. That is a lot of one programme for one date.

The older drama block is worth noting for what it says about the audience. Minder, Dempsey and Makepeace, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Robin of Sherwood all fill the late morning and early afternoon. The Return of Sherlock Holmes begins its third series at 1.50pm with “The Empty House”. These are programmes that have been on ITV4 across most of the last fortnight, and anyone who watches the channel regularly will know the rhythm already.

Late on

Benidorm closes the evening at 11.05pm with S04E06. It has aired on six days in the window, which makes it a staple of the late slot. It is a comfortable wind-down, but not a reason to stay up. Overnight, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet is on at 1.05am and Snatch opens its second series at 2.05am, though that is for the recorders rather than the sofa.

If you only watch one thing, make it the 7pm show and then decide whether the film earns its second half.
