ITV4 saves its best for 9pm, and it’s a Seagal night
ITV4 has one reason to be on tonight: Under Siege at 9pm. It’s a 1992 action film directed by Andrew Davis, with Steven Seagal, Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Busey and Erika Eleniak, and nothing else on the channel this Sunday is as easy to recommend. If you want a no-fuss action film after the weekend, this is the one.
The scheduling is worth knowing about. Under Siege starts at 9pm, stops for a five-minute FYI Daily at 10pm, and picks up again at 10.05. That makes it a long sit, so don’t plan on catching the second half cold. The competition is thin for this sort of viewer: Live NFL on Channel 5 will take the sport crowd, and Gogglebox and One Born Every Minute are on elsewhere, but none of them is another action film.
The afternoon has a second, older option. The Horse Soldiers, John Ford’s 1959 Western with John Wayne and William Holden, starts at 1.50pm and breaks for the same five-minute bulletin at 2.50pm before restarting at 2.55. It’s a gentler way to spend a Sunday than the evening’s film, and a better film than ITV4 usually gets credit for showing. Constance Towers and Hoot Gibson are in the cast too.
Then there’s Sharpe. Sharpe’s Mission, series four, episode three, goes out at 6.45pm and runs for 135 minutes, which is long enough to be a film in its own right. Sharpe turns up on eight days in this window, so the channel clearly trusts it to hold an audience. It’s a solid early-evening anchor and a sensible warm-up for the Seagal.
The day opens with two episodes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at 11.30am and 12.35pm, The Copper Beeches followed by The Norwood Builder. The series is a fixture on ITV4 every day, so don’t treat it as a Sunday special. Jeremy Brett stars, and it remains a good use of a lazy late morning.
The late-night offer is thinner. Universal Soldier, Roland Emmerich’s 1992 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, is on at 12.15am and again at 1.20am after a five-minute news break. It’s fine if you’re awake, and not worth staying up for. All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite takes the 11.05pm slot for two hours, and that’s for the wrestling crowd only.
Everything else is the usual ITV4 filler: motoring, football highlights, Ice Road Truckers and teleshopping. The table below has the times.
