ITV4 hands Friday night to live sport, and the evening is better for it

Most of ITV4’s day is a filing cabinet of old favourites and imports. From half past six it becomes something else: three and a half hours of live racing from the Breeders’ Cup, then straight into wrestling at ten. If you want a reason to be on this channel tonight, it is the racing, and it is a long one.

The Breeders’ Cup block starts at 18:30 and runs 210 minutes, which takes it right up to the 22:00 changeover. That is a serious commitment of airtime for a channel that spends the early evening on Ice Road Truckers and River Monsters. It is also the one thing here that cannot be caught later, so it gets the pick. Anyone who only watches racing at the big meetings will find the length easy to justify.

Then comes the anchor. All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite takes the 22:00 slot and a full 125 minutes, and it is the only programme in ITV4’s primetime. It started on America’s TNT, has run to four series and 204 episodes, and on this channel it turns up three times in the ten-day window, so it is a regular. The competition is soft: BBC News at Ten, A&E After Dark on 5star, Carrie on BBC Two. Dynamite gets three stars from me. That is not a knock on the product, more an acknowledgement that two hours is a lot to ask of anyone who has just sat through the racing, and ITV4 has not given the two blocks any breathing space.

The daytime is the pleasant surprise. Minder at 08:30 is a daily fixture, and today’s is “Whatever Happened to Her Indoors?”, a title that does half the marketing work by itself. At 10:40, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes brings “The Red Headed League”, and Robin of Sherwood follows at 11:50. Dempsey and Makepeace runs twice, at 09:30 and 12:55. That is a proper morning of vintage drama, and for a lot of viewers it is the most satisfying stretch of the day.

The afternoon is thinner. Live coverage of the FIA Extreme H World Cup, Day 2, comes at 14:00 for an hour, which is a niche taste, and then American Pickers and Ice Road Truckers fill the gap until the racing. Both of those are heavily repeated: American Pickers and Ice Road Truckers each air twice today and both have been on in each of the last several days. They are wallpaper, and I have rated Ice Road Truckers accordingly.

Overnight is StartUp, BattleBots, Auto Mundial and then three hours of Teleshopping from 03:00. Nothing there needs your attention.

The practical advice is short. Use the morning for the old dramas, tune in for the racing at 18:30, and decide at 22:00 whether you have the stamina for Dynamite.
