ITV4 saves its best slot for teatime, and primetime is a sitcom double bill

The evening’s real event is at 18:45, not at nine. Sharpe’s Revenge runs 135 minutes, the longest single block on ITV4 all day, and it opens series five. That is a proper night-in-the-armchair slot: Sean Bean, Hugh Fraser, Daragh O’Malley and Assumpta Serna, in a series directed by Tom Clegg. It’s the pick, and four stars is fair for a long, properly cast evening of period adventure.

The caution is that Sharpe is never far from the schedule. It turns up on eight of the ten days we can see, so this is a fixture ITV4 leans on rather than a rare outing. Sixteen episodes in total is a small catalogue to keep stretching. Robin of Sherwood is on at 11:50 with Lord of the Trees, one of nine days it appears. Minder airs three times, at 08:35, 17:40 and 23:35, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes sits at 10:45. ITV4 has a clear identity on a weekday: older drama in the daytime, action and adventure either side of tea.

Then comes the part where the channel runs out of ideas. Benidorm takes both primetime slots, Episode 6 at 21:00 and Episode 7 at 22:00. Derren Litten’s sitcom has nine series and 56 episodes behind it, so there is a deep well to draw from, and it turns up on four days of the ten we can see. Two hours of the same programme is a comfortable choice for anyone who already knows the resort and its regulars, but it isn’t a reason to switch on if you’ve never seen it. Three stars each, mainly because it is dependable rather than because the double bill does anything clever.

The competition at nine is stiff. The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked is on BBC One, Gogglebox is on E4, and Channel 5 has The Madame Blanc Mysteries. Benidorm’s audience is a different one from any of those, which is probably the point.

Earlier in the afternoon, Ice Road Truckers starts its third series at 15:35 with Deadliest Ice Road, followed by Rookie Run at 16:35. It’s a US-Canadian reality series with 11 series and 138 episodes to date, and Lisa Kelly is the name attached. ITV4 runs it twice today and across eight days of the window, so it’s a strand more than an event, but a series opener in a quiet part of the day is still worth a mention. American Pickers fills the early hours and the early afternoon; it’s on twice, again with no particular urgency about it.

Late on, the sport is modest: EFL Cup Highlights for Round 4 at midnight, then Ligue 1 Football highlights at 23:00 for 35 minutes. Live motorsport sits at 13:00 with the FIA Extreme H World Cup from Qiddiya City. Nothing there changes the shape of the night.

So the shortlist is short. Watch Sharpe at 18:45, keep Benidorm on if that’s your sort of company, and treat the rest of ITV4 as a good background channel rather than an appointment.
