Full ITV4 listings for Saturday 31 October 2026, with times in London local time.

Breeders’ Cup takes the whole of primetime

ITV4’s Saturday is built around one decision: nearly three hours of live racing from the Breeders’ Cup, from 8pm, and nothing else competes with it on the channel. If you care about the sport, this is the night’s pick. If you don’t, the evening’s other good idea comes earlier, with Sharpe.

The racing is billed as ITV Racing Live and runs for 165 minutes, which takes it to 10.45pm without a break for anything else. That is a generous slot, and ITV4 has been giving the strand room all week: the live programme also appears on Friday. A long live broadcast has an obvious weakness, which is that the stretches between races can sag on a channel with no studio banter to lean on. The compensation is that nothing else on ITV4 tonight asks you to be anywhere at a fixed moment, so you can dip in and out.

Elsewhere at 8pm the competition is mostly what you would expect on a Saturday: Location, Location, Location on 4seven, a western on 5action, NCIS: Los Angeles on 5USA. None of it is live. That is the case for racing: it is the one thing in the hour that has to be watched as it happens.

The Sharpe double

Before that, the channel runs Sharpe back to back through the afternoon and early evening. Sharpe’s Mission, series 4 episode 3, starts at 3.40pm and lasts 125 minutes. Sharpe’s Revenge follows at 5.45pm, the first episode of series 5, and runs 135 minutes.

Sharpe is the sort of programme ITV4 has made its own: a British historical drama with Sean Bean, Hugh Fraser, Daragh O’Malley and Assumpta Serna in the cast, directed by Tom Clegg, and 16 episodes in total. It turns up on eight of the days in our listings window, and twice today, so this is not an event so much as a fixture. That matters for how you treat it. If you have never seen it, the series 5 opener is a tidy entry point, because it begins a run rather than finishing one. If you are watching in order, the afternoon episode comes first.

More than four hours of Sharpe is a decent use of a Halloween afternoon, and the second episode ends at 8pm on the dot, handing straight over to the racing.

After the racing

At 10.45pm English Football League Highlights takes over for 90 minutes. It is the channel’s standard late Saturday slot and a reliable one, though it arrives with stiff opposition. BBC Two has Oasis: Live at the City of Manchester Stadium, ITV1 has Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening and Dave has Would I Lie To You?. The highlights are the choice for anyone who wants to catch up on the day’s football without knowing a score; the others are for people who don’t mind either way.

What can wait

The daytime is mostly football nostalgia and motorsport. The Big Match Revisited has three episodes on the day’s schedule, the FIA Extreme H World Cup final day is live at noon for two hours, and ITV Racing fills the morning at 9.30am. All are competent and none is urgent. Dark Side of the Ring at five past midnight is the overnight curiosity, for wrestling fans only.

The night, then, comes down to two choices. Racing at 8pm if the sport is your thing; Sharpe at 5.45pm if it isn’t.
