ITV3 books the evening for Midsomer Murders and Downton Abbey

ITV3 has the cosiest primetime on television tonight and does not pretend otherwise: two hours of Midsomer Murders at 8pm, then Downton Abbey at 10pm. Midsomer is the pick.

The Black Book is the 2nd episode of series 12 and takes the full 120 minutes. Midsomer Murders is a British detective drama with a long record: 26 series and 148 episodes, with Neil Dudgeon, Fiona Dolman and Tamzin Malleson in the cast. It is also on ITV3 every day, so the question is not whether to watch it but whether this particular night suits you. It faces Panorama, Only Connect and Traffic Cops: Elite Squad One, and for anyone who wants a long, settled evening it beats all three. Four stars, and for once a pick that is not a bold one.

Downton Abbey at 10pm is Episode 7 of series five, an hour, and a clean change of pace after the detective. The series ran from 2010 to 2015, with six series and 52 episodes, and Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Elizabeth McGovern are in the cast. Against BBC News at Ten and Live at the Apollo it is the quiet option. Four stars.

The surprise is how much crime sits around those two. A Touch of Frost appears twice, and both airings are worth noting. At 9.15am it begins at the very start, S01E01, Care and Protection, at 135 minutes. At 11pm it returns with In the Public Interest, from series 14, at 115 minutes. David Jason leads the cast, and the show has 15 series behind it. Between them they span the show’s run, from its first series to its fourteenth, which is a pleasing bit of scheduling. Heartbeat does the same job through the afternoon, with four episodes from 11.30am onwards, two of which land at 5.50pm and 6.55pm and run straight into primetime. Midsomer also turns up at 1.35pm, Blood Wedding, series 11.

Everything else is comfort. Classic Emmerdale and Classic Coronation Street fill the morning and teatime, three Emmerdale episodes and four Coronation Street, with Wild at Heart at 6am and George and Mildred overnight. The Blame, at 12.55am, is the late-night drama.

If you want one hour, take Downton. If you want the evening, 8pm is the start.
