ITV3 treats Halloween as a normal Saturday, and the Poirot at lunchtime is the one nod to it
ITV3 has not rebuilt its schedule for 31 October. Midsomer Murders fills the afternoon and evening in four straight two-hour slots, Vera takes over at 10pm and Inspector Morse sits either side of the day. The only programme that seems to know what night it is comes at 12.05pm: Agatha Christie’s Poirot, with Hallowe’en Party, a 115-minute episode from series 12. It is the sensible pick for the date, and worth more than the daytime filler its slot might suggest.
Midsomer, all afternoon
Midsomer Murders is on at 2pm with Blood Wedding, at 4pm with Midsomer Life, at 6pm with The Magician’s Nephew and at 8pm with Talking to the Dead. Each runs 120 minutes. They come from series 11 but not in order, with episodes 2, 4, 5 and 7, so anyone following the run has gaps. The series is 26 series and 148 episodes long to date, with Neil Dudgeon in the cast, and ITV3 airs it every day, which is why a four-hour block of it doesn’t count as an event.
The 8pm episode is the one that gets the primetime billing, and it’s the weaker slot to watch it in, since it goes up against NCIS: Los Angeles on 5USA and Mysteries Unearthed With Danny Trejo on Blaze among others. Three stars.
Vera at ten
Vera: Fast Love, 110 minutes, is S13E01 and lands at 10pm. It is the best programme of the primetime hours here, and it has an easy run to itself, since the opposition is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on 5USA and Top of the Pops on BBC Two. ITV3 has Vera on six days across these two weeks, so the channel clearly leans on it. Four stars.
Morse, three times
Inspector Morse, with John Thaw and Kevin Whately, shows up three times across the day: The Way Through the Woods at 6.35am, The Daughters of Cain at 8.45am, and Deadly Slumber at 11.50pm to close the day. The first two are 130 and 135 minutes, so it’s easy to lose the whole morning to them. The series has 12 series and 33 episodes to date, and the late slot, at 130 minutes, is the longest wind-down on the channel.
The rest
Wycliffe has 65 minutes at 11am, The Royal opens the night at 12.50am and George and Mildred has two short slots, at 1.50am and 6am. They’re fixtures, not events.
