ITV3 has made the easiest decision in television tonight: put Doc Martin on at 8pm, run a second one straight after, then hand over to Downton Abbey. It is three hours of the channel’s most reliable material, and if you want an evening in front of a drama that asks nothing of you, this is the schedule to pick.

Doc Martin leads. Haemophobia is episode 6 of series one at 8pm, and at 9pm the channel moves on to Old Dogs, which opens series two. That pairing matters. It moves from series one into series two in a single night, which makes a neat double bill for anyone watching in order. The programme has run to ten series and 79 episodes, with Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz in the leads and Stephanie Cole and Selina Cadell in the cast. ITV3 also had it on the 23rd and 25th, so the double bill is a pattern the channel clearly likes.

The 8pm hour faces a crowded field: The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One, Gardeners’ World on BBC Two, Egypt with Dan Snow on Channel 5 and First Dates on E4.
