ITV3 gives Wednesday night to crime, then a costume drama, then more crime

ITV3 has put its whole Wednesday primetime behind a single decision: two hours of Midsomer Murders at 8pm, with Shot at Dawn opening series 11, then Downton Abbey, then Lewis. That is the pick, and it is a strong run. A channel that knows what its audience wants has rarely been this straightforward about giving it to them.

Midsomer Murders is a British detective drama that began on ITV, now 26 series and 148 episodes deep, with Neil Dudgeon among its cast and the stories based on Chief Inspector Barnaby. Starting a series at 8pm and giving it 120 minutes is a statement of intent. It faces Celebrity Race Across the World on BBC One, The Repair Shop on BBC Two and NCIS on 5USA, so it is not alone in asking for a big chunk of the evening, but it asks the most. Midsomer also shows up in the afternoon, with Death and Dust at 1.35pm running 125 minutes, so anyone who wants more of it can have a warm-up.

Downton Abbey follows at 10pm with episode 4 of the fifth series. This is the 2010 to 2015 historical drama, six series and 52 episodes, with Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Laura Carmichael in the cast. It is a deliberate change of mood after the murder: costume after crime, and the hour is calm enough to wind down on. Its competitors are the BBC news and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which is no kind of rival if you want to go to bed in a good mood. It runs a full hour.

Then at 11pm comes Lewis: One for Sorrow, opening series 9 and running 110 minutes. It is the second series opener of the night, and I would argue the more interesting one because it arrives with no fanfare. It is a late-night slot given to a series that is starting, which suggests the channel thinks people will stay up for it. They probably will.

The daytime is a long procession of the same few things. Heartbeat is on four times, from 11.30am to the evening: Vendetta, Sleeping Dogs, Another Little Piece of My Heart and Seeds of Destruction, the last at 6.55pm. It is a lot of one show, and I would mark the evening run down for that reason alone. Inspector Morse takes the 9.15am slot for 135 minutes with Death Is Now My Neighbour, and it is the best thing before lunch.

The soaps run all day: Classic Emmerdale and Classic Coronation Street each appear twice, and Wild at Heart opens the breakfast block at 6am. The Royal is on overnight at 12.50am and George and Mildred at 1.50am, and then Teleshopping runs 210 minutes from 2.30am.

If you can only give ITV3 one slot, give it 8pm. If you can stay up, give it three.
