ITV3 runs three Midsomer Murders before bedtime, and Vera is the one to wait for

ITV3 on a Sunday is a conveyor belt of detectives, and the best of it comes last. Vera at 10pm runs for 110 minutes, and it is the reason to stay up. Midsomer Murders has the evening to itself before that, which is the problem: by 10pm the channel will have shown it three times in a day.

Vera, the late pick

Vera’s episode is Tender, from series 13, and the slot is a good one. At 10pm its opposition is BBC Weekend News, Later … with Jools Holland and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, all of which ask for less. Vera has been on ITV3 on seven days in the current window, so it is a regular, and the late slot gives it a full 110 minutes after the day’s Midsomer run has finished. Four stars.

Midsomer Murders, three times

Midsomer Murders is a daily fixture and tonight it stretches thin. The Debt of Lies, from series 23, is on at 10.50am for two hours. The Dogleg Murders, series 12, is on at 6pm, also two hours. Secrets and Spies, series 12 again, takes 8pm. The programme has 26 series and 148 episodes to date, so the channel is not short of material, and the three showings add up to six hours.

The 8pm showing is the anchor of the evening and it meets Blue Planet III on BBC One, Columbo on 5USA and Bruce Almighty on ITV2. Midsomer is the comfortable choice rather than the exciting one. Three stars.

Morning and afternoon

The better of the daytime is Agatha Christie’s Poirot at 8.50am. After the Funeral is a 120-minute slot, and Poirot has turned up on two days in the window. It is a proper reason to be awake early on a Sunday. Four stars.

Downton Abbey then runs five episodes back to back from 12.50pm, episodes 2 to 6 of series 5, which makes it the afternoon’s one commitment. Three stars: it rewards anyone who has the time to settle in, and does nothing for anyone who dips in.

Wycliffe airs at breakfast time, Time Out at 6.30am and Feeding the Rat at 7.40am, and closes the night at 11.50pm with Old Crimes, New Times. George and Mildred opens the day at 6am. The rest of the overnight is Teleshopping and Unwind with ITV.
