ITV2 opens a new run of The 1% Club and then hands the night to Big Brother

ITV2’s evening has one new start and one long stay: The 1% Club begins series five at 8pm, and Big Brother takes over for the next two hours. The quiz is the better programme to be in the room for.

The 1% Club is a British quiz show that started on ITV and is the only series opener in primetime tonight. It faces Panorama, Only Connect and Traffic Cops on Channel 5, which is a lot of factual programmes, so a quiz is easy to pick out. It is also the night’s neatest piece of scheduling, because it sits between Deal or No Deal at 7pm and Big Brother at 9pm and so gives the evening a spine. Four stars, and the pick.

Big Brother follows at 9pm with Episode 44 of series four, then Big Brother: The Group Chat at 10pm, Episode 36, running 65 minutes. The main programme is a reality show; The Group Chat is listed as an interview and chat show. Neither is going to convert anyone. The format is a British one with sixteen series behind it, and the channel is clearly leaning on it: the main show has been on ITV2 ten times in the window, and so has The Group Chat. At 10pm it meets BBC News at Ten and Live at the Apollo. Three stars each for those who follow it.

Before all that, Deal or No Deal fills 7pm with a Celebrity Special featuring Zoe Ball. It also appears at 1.35am, midday, and twice in the afternoon as Banker’s Best Battles, so five times in the day. You can see why the schedule treats it as a staple. Two stars for a primetime slot that is mostly there to lead into the quiz.

Daytime is a series of doubles. The Only Way Is Essex opens series 36 with its first and second episodes at 9.15am and 3.05pm, which is an odd way to launch anything. The Real Housewives of Potomac and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills each get two outings, and both have been on ITV2 on ten days in the window. Celebrity Catchphrase starts its eleventh series at 6pm, with Natalie Cassidy, Sam Aston and Lou Sanders.

The late slot goes to Family Guy, with two episodes from 11.05pm.
