ITV2 builds its Wednesday around Big Brother, and nothing else gets close

ITV2 has two hours of Big Brother at the end of the evening and a quiz before them, and that is the whole argument. Big Brother at 9pm is the pick. It is a British format now in its sixteenth series, and the channel is giving it a full hour followed by Big Brother: The Group Chat at 10pm, a 65-minute interview and chat show that gets the longest slot of the night. When a channel stacks two programmes from one brand back to back, it is telling you where its audience is.

The competition is the interesting part. At 9pm Big Brother is against Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC One, Max Payne on 5Star and Law & Order: Organized Crime on 5USA. At 10pm it is the BBC news and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Both slots set reality against drama, and ITV2 is happy with that match-up. The Group Chat is the weaker of the pair, a talk show built around the main one, and I would mark it down a notch for that reason. It has reached episode 33 of its first series, which is a lot of chat.

Before that, The 1% Club at 8pm is the sharpest hour on the channel. It is a quiz show, a British one that began on ITV, and this is its fourteenth episode of the fourth series. A quiz is the best bridge into a reality block: it asks little of you and sets the evening up. The opposition at that hour is Celebrity Race Across the World and The Repair Shop, so ITV2 is not trying to match them on tone.

Deal or No Deal: Banker’s Best Battles has two slots at 7pm and 7.25pm, with different episodes, and the same programme is also on twice in the afternoon. The channel has leaned on this one for three days running now. I would not seek it out. Celebrity Catchphrase starts its fifth series at 6pm, though episode 7 of that series is already on at 2.05pm, which is an odd order to hand viewers.

Daytime is a long run of Real Housewives, The Only Way Is Essex, Dawson’s Creek and Charmed. Real Housewives of Potomac, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Only Way Is Essex each appear twice. The night closes with two Family Guy episodes at 11.05pm and 11.35pm, which is where it was always going to finish.

If you have one hour, 9pm is the one.
