ITV2’s night is Big Brother’s eviction, and nothing else on the channel competes with it

ITV2 has one real event tonight, the live Big Brother eviction at 9pm, and it has arranged the rest of the evening to lead into it. The show runs 95 minutes, which makes it the longest programme on the channel by some distance. This is the British version, now on its sixteenth series, so the format is established enough that the channel can give it the biggest slot of the night without needing to explain itself.

The competition is not strong for that audience. At 9pm Channel 5 has Harrods: The Rise & Fall of a British Institution, E4 has M3GAN and 4seven has 24 Hours in A&E. Those are all different propositions, and none is built for someone who wants to see who leaves. A live eviction needs watching as it happens, which is the whole point of putting it in the middle of primetime. Three stars from me: the slot suits it, but a live results show lives or dies on what happens in the room, and nobody can judge that in advance.

The 1% Club at 8pm is the better warm-up than it looks. It is a quiz show, and it has appeared on ITV2 every weekday for two weeks, so the channel treats it as a daily fixture. Tonight brings episode 15 of series four. Against it BBC One has The Celebrity Traitors, which is the stronger draw if you want the evening’s talking point, but The 1% Club is a fair choice for a household that wants a quiz.

Before that, two instalments of Deal or No Deal: Banker’s Best Battles run back to back, at 7pm and 7:25pm. The channel shows the programme every weekday this week and had it twice in the afternoon too, so it is a fixture, not a surprise. It fills the time before the real programmes start.

The afternoon has the one fresh start of the day. The Only Way Is Essex returns at 3:10pm with the first episode of series 36, and the channel has it down twice today, with a morning airing of an episode from series 35. That is a long-running reality show, now at 395 episodes, and it is well served by being run in sequence like this. If you follow it, 3:10pm is the one to record.

After Big Brother, Family Guy takes over at 22:35, then another Family Guy at 23:05 and American Dad! at 23:35. These are the channel’s late-night fixtures, and none of it needs a recommendation. At 22:35 Family Guy faces The Graham Norton Show on BBC One and Top Gun on ITV1, which is the harder fight.

Overall this is a one-programme night. Watch Big Brother live if you are following it, and let the rest of the schedule fill the gaps.
