ITV2 builds its night around Big Brother, and gives it two hours to do it

From 9pm ITV2 is Big Brother and nothing else: the main show at 9, then The Group Chat at 10. If that is why you tuned in, the channel has made it easy. If it is not, the evening before that is a quiz warm-up and then very little else.

Big Brother at 9pm

Episode 41 of this series of Big Brother is the evening’s anchor, an hour long, and it is a daily strand on ITV2, so there is no scarcity value here. Nobody turns up to it as an event. They turn up because it is what the channel does at 9. Opposite it are Gogglebox on E4, The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked on BBC One and The Madame Blanc Mysteries on Channel 5, so it faces three of the evening’s most talked-about slots. It is the pick, but only just: three stars.

The Group Chat at 10pm

Big Brother: The Group Chat is on its 34th episode and runs 65 minutes, five minutes longer than the show it follows. It has aired on ten days in the window, which makes it more of a nightly fixture than a standalone programme. An hour of talk about an hour of television is a lot to ask. Two stars: it will keep faithful viewers, and it may not hold anyone else.

The 1% Club at 8pm

The 1% Club is a quiz show on ITV, and this is episode 15 of series four. It is on nine days in the window. It is the easiest viewing on the channel tonight and a sensible way into the Big Brother block, since it ends exactly when the main show starts. Three stars. Against it, BBC One has The Celebrity Traitors and Channel 5 has The Yorkshire Vet.

Deal or No Deal first

The 7pm hour is two Deal or No Deal: Banker’s Best Battles episodes back to back, at 7 and 7.25, with Mark and Chisara and then Georgia and Matt. Banker’s Best Battles has also run on four days of the window, and Deal or No Deal appears three more times earlier in the day, so there is a lot of it. Two stars for the evening pair: perfectly harmless, and they fill the gap.

Elsewhere in the day

Celebrity Catchphrase opens its fifth series at 2.05pm, with another episode at 6pm. The reality block leans on titles that air twice: The Real Housewives of Potomac and of Beverly Hills both appear twice, as does The Only Way Is Essex, and Bob’s Burgers is on twice. Family Guy closes the evening with two episodes from 11.05pm.
